Where to trust it, where to check it, how to keep client and company information safe, and how to tie the work back to value. 34PDUs Using AI at Work – Step By Step The practical one. Status reporting, schedule and risk, resourcing, stakeholder communication and decisions from project data — each worked end to end, then applied to your own programmes. 10PDUs Precise Questions: Is Your Team Ready? The programme-level one. Asking the question that surfaces what people are not saying — testing readiness, probing assumptions, and finding the dependency before it finds you. The three courses are built around the PMI Talent Triangle® requirement, so you have nothing to work out. Each one is pre-approved and registered with PMI, and carries its own claim code. 68 PDUs is about 68 hours of registered learning — an evening a week, or a few long sittings; your access lasts a year, so there is no deadline from us. The bundle gives you the 60 Education PDUs your PgMP cycle needs, with eight to spare. You then complete the renewal yourself at PMI.org and pay PMI's renewal fee — the same step every PgMP holder does. To a large extent, yes — and this is PMI's own rule, not ours. The CCR Handbook says Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs are broader educational topics and can be applied across every certification you hold, and that all Ways of Working PDUs earned count towards maintaining the PMP. So you enter the same claim codes under each credential in CCRS. Check the totals on your own dashboard before you renew, because your existing PDUs differ between the two cycles. Yes. Everything is online at lms.kavitasharma.net, on a laptop or a phone, and PMI claim codes work the same in every country. You can still renew. PMI gives you a one-year suspension period after your cycle end date; earn the PDUs, report them in CCRS and pay the fee inside that window and your status returns to Active. If the year has passed, the credential expires and you would need to sit the exam again — so if you are suspended, start now. Yes. Each course in this bundle is pre-approved and registered with PMI, and has its own claim code. When you enter the code in CCRS, PMI already holds the course record, so the claim goes through without you having to describe or justify the learning. It is the whole sixty, with eight to spare. Nothing else is needed for the Education part of your cycle. Not wasted, but worth checking first. PMI lets you carry up to 20 PDUs into your next PgMP cycle — but only ones earned in the final 12 months of the current cycle. Put the numbers already on your dashboard into the calculator to check how many PDUs you still need and see the gap you actually have to close. Both, deliberately. The two AI courses are about applying AI to the work you already run, at whatever scale you run it. Precise Questions is programme-level by design — it is about surfacing what teams are not telling you and finding dependencies early, which is the part of the job that gets harder as the number of moving parts grows. You will have a downloadable certificate for each course, and every course is on PMI's own register under its claim code. An audit asks for proof that the learning took place; the certificates are that proof. If PMI does select you, message Kavita and we will help you put the response together and clear it. Nobody can promise the result of an audit, and we do not — but you will have exactly what PMI asks to see, and you will not be doing it alone. Usually, yes. You can start the moment you buy, and you can claim each course's PDUs as soon as you finish that course — a pre-approved claim code is accepted in CCRS straight away. PMI also allows 90 days after your cycle end date to complete the renewal. If you are very close to the line, message Kavita first and she will tell you honestly whether it fits. You have 1 year of access at lms.kavitasharma.net. You can claim a course's PDUs as soon as you finish that course — you do not have to wait until all three are done. The courses start from nothing, but they do not stop there. Most of the content is about applying AI to programme work properly — checking output, protecting confidential information, and building a method you can repeat — which is the part regular ChatGPT users tend to have skipped. Created by Kavita Sharma, PMP, PgMP, PMBOK Guide contributor, with 16 years as a practitioner and more than 10 years coaching project professionals. 34 Education PDUsNo exam Pre-approved courseStart today What's inside the PMI-RMP renewal pack One PMI-registered course carrying 34 Education PDUs, covering the full 30-PDU requirement with four to spare. Using AI at Work — Step by Step is the practical version: not a survey of what AI might do one day, but the work you are already doing, done with AI beside you, each piece worked end to end and applied to your own delivery. The course is built around the PMI Talent Triangle requirement, so nothing needs to be worked out separately. It is pre-approved and registered with PMI, carries its own claim code, and represents about 34 hours of registered learning — roughly an evening a week for a couple of months, or a few longer sittings. Access lasts one year, so there is no deadline set by the course itself. Status reporting: turning raw delivery data into something a stakeholder actually readsSchedule and risk: spotting what is slipping and what is about to Resourcing: capacity, load and the conversations that follow from themStakeholder communication: the right message, at the right length, for the right person Decisions from project data: asking your own numbers a better question Your 30 PMI-RMP PDUs, fully covered PMI asks for 30 PDUs with a minimum in each Talent Triangle area. This pack clears all of it in one course, with four PDUs left over. Ways of Working: coveredPower Skills: covered Business Acumen: coveredTotal delivered: 34 PDUs How many PDUs does a PMI-RMP renewal actually need? PMI-RMP renewal requires 30 PDUs within each three-year continuing certification cycle. Of those, at least 18 must come from Education, structured taught learning, with the remainder available from other categories. The cycle itself runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. The same structure applies across PMI's other certifications, though the totals differ. PMI-RMP and PMI-ACP: 30 PDUs every three years, at least 18 Education CAPM: 15 PDUs every three years, at least 9 Education PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA: 60 PDUs every three years, at least 35 Education, with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, and Giving Back capped at 25 PDUs Why choose a single PDU pack? Questions people ask Yes. The pack provides 34 Education PDUs against the 30-PDU requirement, including the Talent Triangle minimums, and the renewal itself is completed at PMI.org by paying PMI's renewal fee. Yes. The course is pre-approved and registered with PMI with its own claim code, so the 34 PDUs land against the PMI-RMP cycle once the code is entered. No. It teaches how to use AI on the work a risk practitioner already does, such as spotting trends, forecasting delays and automating reporting, and it is registered with PMI to report against the PMI-RMP through its claim code. Yes. The course runs online at lms.kavitasharma.net on a laptop or a phone, and PMI claim codes work the same in every country. It can still be renewed within PMI's one-year suspension window by earning the PDUs, reporting them in CCRS and paying the fee; after that year the credential expires and the exam must be retaken. It is the whole 30 PDUs and more, since the course carries 34 Education PDUs and covers the full cycle. If earned in the final 12 months of the cycle, PMI allows up to 10 spare PDUs to carry into the next cycle; earned earlier, they simply remain on the current cycle's record. It can, since PMI's CCR Handbook allows Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs to apply across certifications and Ways of Working PDUs to count towards the PMP, though each credential's own dashboard should be checked since cycle end dates differ. Not wasted, but worth checking first by putting existing dashboard totals into the PDU calculator to see the exact gap still to close. The course provides a downloadable certificate and sits on PMI's own register under its claim code, and help preparing an audit response is available on request, though no audit outcome can be guaranteed. This course is how the PDU system works, explained properly, plus a free claim to practise on. If you later want a pack that closes your whole cycle, you will already know exactly what you are buying — and if you do not, you have still lost nothing. Yes. The course is pre-approved and registered with PMI and has its own claim code. When you enter the code in CCRS, PMI already holds the course record, so the claim goes through without you having to describe or justify the learning. It is 1 Education PDU in Ways of Working, so it counts towards any PMI credential you hold. If you hold more than one, you enter the same claim code once under each. In your welcome email, and in the claim pack PDF attached to it. It is not inside the course and it is not printed on your certificate, so keep that email. About an hour for the course, and about a minute to report the PDU in CCRS. Your access lasts a year, so there is no rush from us. That is exactly who this is for. The course walks through the CCRS screens before you go anywhere near them, and the claim pack PDF has the same steps in writing. If you still get stuck, message Kavita on WhatsApp. Not strictly — every pack comes with the same claim instructions. But an hour spent understanding carry-forward, the Talent Triangle minimums and what an audit asks for tends to change what people buy, usually for the better. You will have a downloadable certificate, and the course is on PMI's own register under its claim code. An audit asks for proof that the learning took place; the certificate is that proof. If PMI does select you, message Kavita and we will help you put the response together and clear it. Nobody can promise the result of an audit, and we do not — but you will have exactly what PMI asks to see. No. You get your welcome email with the code and the claim pack, and after that only occasional notes when something genuinely changes in the CCR programme. Unsubscribe in one click, any time. Because PMI asks for a minimum in each of three areas, and only one of them comes from running projects. Where the 8-8-8 actually sits This is the part most people get wrong. The Talent Triangle minimums sit inside the Education requirement — not spread across the whole 60. For a PMP: 8 8 8 11 up to 25 Ways of Working Power Skills Business Acumen Education, any area Giving Back 35 of your 60 must be Education. Inside that 35, at least 8 must be Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills and 8 Business Acumen. The other 11 can come from any area. Only the last 25 may be Giving Back — and Giving Back never counts towards the 8-8-8. PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP work the same way at 4-4-4 inside 18 Education. CAPM is 2-2-2 inside 9. The three PMI Talent Triangle® areas PMI groups learning into three areas, and asks for a minimum in each one. How many PDUs you need in each Talent Triangle area → Ways of Working Delivery, agile, risk, scheduling, using AI on project work. Your day job builds this. Most people have plenty. Power Skills Leadership, communication, negotiation, coaching. Rarely taught on the job, and usually the first gap people find. Business Acumen Business cases, benefits, strategy, finance, governance. The second gap, and the one people find last. Volunteering will not cover the minimums. Running projects, mentoring and volunteering all count as Giving Back. They cannot fill the Power Skills or the Business Acumen minimum — PMI wants those taught. That is why a registered course is not just the faster route; for those PDUs it is the only one. What do I get with every PDU pack? A: Yes. Every course is registered with PMI and carries its own claim code. When you enter the code in CCRS, PMI already holds the course record, so the claim goes through without you describing the learning. Q: I hold two PMI certifications. Do these PDUs count for both? A: Yes. PMI lets you report one activity against more than one certification you hold, as long as it applies to each. Enter the same claim code once under each credential. Q: What if my certification is already suspended? A: You can still renew. PMI allows 12 months of suspension after the cycle end date; earn the PDUs, report them in CCRS and pay the fee inside that window and your status returns to Active. - [60 PDU bundles compared](https://kavitasharma.net/60-pdu-bundles-compared/): Side-by-side comparison of 60 PDU bundles. Kavita Sharma, PMP, PgMP · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026 · last reviewed September 2026 Which PDU bundle should I buy? Buy a 60-PDU bundle only if you have earned nothing this cycle. If your Giving Back is already at its cap of 25, you need 35 Education PDUs, not 60. If your total is fine but one Talent Triangle area is empty, you need 24. All three packs below are registered with PMI, arrive with a claim code, and cover the 8 PDUs in each area that Giving Back can never fill. What is in the 60 PDU bundle? Three self-paced courses that together supply 63 PDUs, so you clear the 60 and carry a little spare. Each one is registered with PMI under its own claim code, and each is claimed separately in CCRS. You have one year of access on lms.kavitasharma.net, which is long enough to take them at the pace the hours actually need. 24 PDUs The Happy AI Leader Carries the Talent Triangle minimums on its own, 8 in every area, so the part of the requirement you cannot earn at work is settled before you start anything else. 34 PDUs Smart Manager - Be more Productive The largest single course in the line and spread evenly across all three areas, so it does most of the lifting without leaving a thin spot anywhere. 5 PDUs From Project Delivery to Programme Thinking Weighted to Business Acumen, the area most people are shortest in, and the one a delivery role rarely builds on its own. How is this different from a cheaper PDU bundle? PDU bundles look interchangeable on a price page and are not. The thing that separates them is not the number of hours or the sticker. It is whether PMI already holds a record of the activity you are claiming. What you are buyingIs the activity registered with PMI?How you report it in CCRSWhat you hold if you are audited A pack from a PMI-registered providerYes. Every course carries its own claim code.Paste the code. The title, the provider and the Talent Triangle split fill themselves in.Your certificate of completion, against PMI's own record of the course. Free PDUs you find yourselfMixed. PMI's own content and chapter events are recorded. A podcast, a blog or a book is not.Recorded ones appear or claim by code. Everything else is typed in, activity by activity.Notes and dates for every single entry. PMI selects a percentage of certification holders for audit and asks for supporting material. Keep documentation for at least 18 months after the cycle ends, whichever route you take. The question to ask a seller is not what it costs. It is whether they can give you a claim code. A provider who can name the code has a registration behind it. A provider who tells you to type the course name in yourself is selling you the hours, not the record, and you are the one who has to defend it later. Can I just earn all 60 PDUs for free? Yes, and it is worth saying so plainly. PMI puts no price condition on a PDU. Chapter events, webinars, podcasts, reading, mentoring, volunteering and your own work as a practitioner all count, and plenty of people renew without spending anything. What free changes is not whether you can renew. It is how much of the work lands on you. Free cannot reach the last 24 Giving Back stops at 25 PDUs, and the 8 in each Talent Triangle area sit inside the Education requirement. Volunteering and working in the role cannot touch them, so at least 35 of your 60 have to be taught, free or paid. Free does not save you the hours One PDU is one hour whoever provides it. Sixty free PDUs is sixty hours of webinars and reading you have to find, sit through and remember to log, usually in pieces of one and two. Free makes you the record Most free learning is self-reported: you enter the provider, the title, the dates and the area, and you keep your own notes for 18 months past the cycle end. Thirty or forty separate entries is thirty or forty things to get right. The honest middle route Mixing is allowed and it is what most people do well. Take the free PDUs that come to you anyway, chapter sessions, a webinar you wanted to watch, the reading you were going to do, and buy the block that covers the 8-8-8 so the part with a hard minimum is settled. If you want to see how a claim code behaves in CCRS before you spend anything, the 1-PDU course on how CCR works is free and carries a real code. Try the free 1-PDU course · Every way to earn a PDU Which of the three packs fits me? PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP and CAPM renew on smaller totals and have their own packs. Why the middle pack is 35 and not some other number Because 35 is the smallest amount of Education anyone renewing a 60-PDU certification can get away with. Giving Back stops at 25, and 60 minus 25 is 35. Someone who has volunteered, mentored and logged their practitioner time to the cap still owes exactly 35 taught PDUs, so a pack of 34 leaves them one short of the total and one short of the Education floor at the same time. The 35 clears both, exactly. What should I buy in my situation? Four situations that cover most people. Open CCRS first and read the three area totals off your dashboard, because the right answer changes completely depending on what is already there. Nothing logged yet The cycle is running and CCRS is empty. Take the 60 PDU bundle: it is the only one that closes the whole requirement in a single purchase, and the per-PDU cost is the lowest on the ladder. Pick the pack for my credential Years of volunteering and mentoring You have given plenty back and PMI has capped it at 25. The 35 PDU pack is built for exactly this: it supplies the taught 35 you still owe and clears every area minimum with it. Check my Giving Back cap Total is fine, one area is blank Fifty-odd PDUs logged and Business Acumen still at zero. The 24 PDU pack puts 8 into each area at once, which is the part no amount of extra Ways of Working will fix. Why an area can block a renewal A handful short Three or four PDUs from done. Do not buy a pack. Take the free 1-PDU course, claim a webinar you attended, and log the reading you have already done this year. Free ways to close a small gap What if I fall between the packs? Some people do. If you hold 10 Giving Back PDUs and nothing else, you owe 50 Education, which is more than the 35 pack carries and less than the 60 bundle. There is no pack in between, and inventing one would not help you: take the 60 bundle, because it is the only thing that finishes the job, and the spare PDUs earned in your final year can carry into the next cycle. Work out my exact gap first Questions people ask before they pick a pack Because the three courses that cover every area cleanly add up to 63. You need 60, so three are spare. PDUs earned in the final 12 months of your cycle, above the requirement, can be carried into the next cycle, up to 20 for a PMP. Not always, and price is the wrong first question. Ask whether each course comes with a PMI claim code, and what the bundle supplies in each Talent Triangle area. A cheap pack that carries both is fine. A cheap pack that is silent on either is asking you to do the reporting and carry the risk. Yes, and it is often the sensible route. Use free learning for the flexible part of the requirement and a registered pack for the 8 in each area, which is where a missing … ## Understand PDUs and renewal (reference) - [PDU hub](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/): What PDUs are, how many you need, how to earn and report them. PMP · PgMP · CAPM · PMI-ACP · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026 What are PDUs, and how many do I need? A PDU is one hour of learning or giving back that PMI counts towards keeping your certification. PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA need 60 every three years. PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP and similar need 30. CAPM needs 15. Most must come from Education, and a minimum must sit in each of the three Talent Triangle areas. Prefer to click through it? Open the PDU Knowledge Base the same rules as tabs, with a "does this count?" checker and the myths that catch people out. What is a PDU? PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. One PDU is one hour spent learning about project, program or portfolio work, or giving back to the profession. You claim them in quarter-hour steps. PMI uses them to check that you are still learning after you passed the exam. What are Education PDUs? Courses, webinars, reading, podcasts, and structured learning at work. Most of your PDUs must come from here. It is also the only place the Talent Triangle minimums can be met. What are Giving Back PDUs? Working as a practitioner, volunteering, mentoring, writing, speaking. They count, but they are capped, and they cannot fill the Talent Triangle minimums. Are PDUs the same as contact hours? No. Contact hours get you into the exam. PDUs keep the certification after you pass. They are counted separately and never swap. How many PDUs do I need? It depends on the certification you hold. Every PMI certification runs on a three-year cycle. Here is the full table. Certification PDUs every 3 years Education minimum Minimum in each Talent Triangle area Giving Back maximum PMP, PgMP, PfMP, PMI-PBA 60 35 8 25 PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP, PMI-CP, PMI-CPMAI 30 18 4 12 CAPM 15 9 2 6 Source: PMI Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook, April 2026. Disciplined Agile certifications run on a separate one-year cycle and are not covered here. Does volunteering count towards the 8 in each area? No. The minimum in each Talent Triangle area sits inside the Education minimum. Running projects, volunteering and mentoring do not count towards it. Those 8 PDUs in Power Skills and 8 in Business Acumen have to be taught. Why do I need 8 PDUs in each Talent Triangle area? Because PMI wants you to grow in three directions, not one. Your day job fills one side of the triangle on its own. The other two sides need deliberate learning, and PMI will not renew you without them. What counts as Ways of Working? Predictive, agile and hybrid delivery. Scheduling, risk, requirements, quality, using AI in delivery. Running projects builds this naturally. What counts as Power Skills? Leadership, communication, negotiation, conflict, coaching, working across generations. Rarely taught on the job. Almost always the first gap. What counts as Business Acumen? Business cases, benefits, strategy, finance, industry knowledge, governance at the top table. The second gap, and the one people find last. Short in one area? The 24-PDU bundle gives you 8 in each. For the full rule, read the Talent Triangle minimums explained. How do I earn PDUs? Five ways. Only the first one reliably counts towards every minimum. Do courses count? Yes. Education. They count towards the Talent Triangle minimums when the provider states the split. The fastest route when you have a gap. Do webinars, books and podcasts count? Yes. Education. Free but slow. Most land in Ways of Working, so they rarely fix a Power Skills or Business Acumen gap. Does training at work count? Yes. Education. Structured sessions your employer runs. Keep the agenda and attendance record in case of audit. Do I get PDUs for doing my job? Yes, a few. Giving Back. A small, capped number each cycle for working as a practitioner. Does not count towards any Talent Triangle minimum. Does volunteering or mentoring count? Yes. Giving Back. Capped at 25 for the 60-PDU certifications, 12 for the 30-PDU ones, 6 for CAPM. Does not count towards any minimum. Can I get PDUs for free? Yes. Start with the free 1-PDU course on how CCR works. Then see every way to earn 60 PDUs and when free is worth the time. How do I report PDUs in CCRS? Three steps. About five minutes per activity. 1. Finish and download Complete the activity and save the certificate. For a course, note the PMI claim code on it. 2. Log in to CCRS Report PDUs, choose the category, enter the code or the details, and pick the Talent Triangle split. 3. Keep the proof PMI can audit you. Keep certificates and records for 18 months after your cycle ends. Screenshots for every step are in how to report PDUs in CCRS. Track what you have claimed with the free PDU log template. What happens if I miss my renewal deadline? Nothing dramatic on day one. But the clock does not stop, and your next cycle date does not move. When does my cycle end? Three years from the day you passed. All PDUs should be reported by then. Is there a grace period? Yes, 90 days. Report late PDUs and pay the renewal fee inside this window and you are fine. What does suspended mean? Miss the window and you are suspended for one year. You cannot use the letters. Finish the PDUs and you are reinstated. What if it expires? A year of suspension with no action and the certification expires. The only way back is the exam. Already suspended? Here is what to do this week. Wondering about the fee? PMP renewal cost, explained. Where can I get the PDUs I need? Pick the certification you hold. Each pack is built to clear the total and every Talent Triangle minimum for that one certification. Self-paced. Certificates on completion. A PMI claim code for every course. I hold PgMP 60 PDUs, more than 8 in each area, all Education. Counts towards your PMP too. I hold PMP The full 60 in one bundle, or the 24-PDU gap-filler if you only need the 8-8-8. I hold CAPM 15 PDUs, 2 in each area, from one course you can finish in a weekend. I hold PMI-ACP 30 PDUs, more than 4 in each area, from one self-paced course. Hold PfMP, PMI-PBA, PMI-RMP or another PMI certification? Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs count towards every certification you hold. See which pack fits. All PDU packs How long does claiming take? About five minutes per course. Each course in a pack comes with its own PMI claim code. Enter it in CCRS, confirm the Talent Triangle split it fills in for you, and the PDUs appear on your dashboard. This short story walks through it. Learning the material takes the hours PMI expects. Claiming it does not. What do people say after renewing? CAPM needs 15, at least 9 from Education, with 2 in each area. Partly. Power Skills and Business Acumen Education PDUs count towards every PMI certification you hold. Ways of Working PDUs are specific to the certification they were earned for, though all of them count towards PMP. Giving Back PDUs apply across all certifications. Only in a narrow case. PDUs earned in the last year of a cycle, after you have already met the requirement, can be carried into the next cycle. Anything earned earlier in the cycle stays in that cycle. No. The minimum in each Talent Triangle area sits inside the Education requirement. Volunteering, mentoring and working as a practitioner are Giving Back and do not count towards it. A code issued by a PMI-registered course provider. Entering it in CCRS fills in the course details and the Talent Triangle split for you. If a bundle contains several courses, each course has its own code and is claimed separately. Usually within minutes of reporting … A PDU is one hour of professional development. A PMP holder needs 60 PDUs every 3 years: at least 35 Education, with at least 8 in each Talent Triangle area, and at most 25 from Giving Back. You report them in PMI's CCRS, then pay PMI's renewal fee of US$60 (member) or US$150. PDUs in one paragraph - Total per cycle (PMP): 60 PDUs - Education minimum: 35 - Talent Triangle minimum: 8 in each of three areas - Giving Back maximum: 25 - Carry-over: up to 20 PDUs from the final 12 months Questions people ask Q: Do unused PDUs carry over? A: Up to 20 PDUs earned in the final 12 months of a cycle can carry into the next PMP cycle. Anything else resets. Q: What happens if I miss the deadline? A: The certification is suspended for 12 months after the cycle end date. Earn and report the PDUs and pay the fee inside that window and it returns to Active; after it the credential expires and the exam must be taken again. - [PDU requirements by certification](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/requirements/): One table: totals, Education minimums, Talent Triangle minimums, from the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026. How many PDUs do I need for my PMI certification? PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA need 60 PDUs every three years, with at least 35 as Education. PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need 30 PDUs every three years, at least 18 Education. CAPM needs 15 PDUs every three years, at least 9 Education. All three Talent Triangle areas need a minimum number of PDUs, and Giving Back is capped separately. 3 years A continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. 25 PDUs Giving Back is capped at 25 PDUs and is optional. 60 PDUs per three-year cycle PMP needs 60 PDUs every three years, of which at least 35 must be Education. How many PDUs do I need for my PMI certification? This page reflects the PMI Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook, April 2026 edition, and covers every PMI certification. PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA need 60 PDUs every three years. PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP, PMI-CP and PMI-CPMAI need 30. CAPM needs 15. In every case most of them must be Education, and a minimum must sit in each of the three Talent Triangle areas. The full breakdown for each certification follows below. Key numbers 30 PDUs to renew PMI-ACP or PMI-RMP, of which at least 18 must be Education. 15 PDUs to renew CAPM, of which at least 9 must be Education. 3 years — a continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. What are the PDU requirements for each PMI certification? Every number below comes from PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook, April 2026 edition. All cycles run three years, from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. The Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen and any-area figures add up to the Education minimum for each certification. PMI-PMOCP and the Disciplined Agile certifications follow different rules and are covered later on this page. How do you read these numbers? Take PMP. You need 60 PDUs in three years. At least 35 of them must be Education. Inside those 35, at least 8 must be Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills and 8 Business Acumen; the other 11 can be any area. The remaining 25 can be Giving Back, or more Education if you prefer. Education minimum — the number of PDUs that must come from learning: courses, webinars, reading, podcasts, structured training at work. It is a floor, not a cap. You can do all your PDUs as Education. Talent Triangle minimums — the smallest number of Education PDUs you must have in each of the three areas. They sit inside the Education minimum. Giving Back cannot fill them. Giving Back maximum — the most PDUs PMI will accept for working as a practitioner, volunteering, mentoring or creating content. Anything above the cap is not counted. Which rules apply to me? PMP, PgMP, PfMP or PMI-PBA — 60 PDUs in three years. 35 Education, with 8 in each Talent Triangle area. Giving Back capped at 25. The four certifications share one rule, so if you hold two of them your Education PDUs do double duty. PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP, PMI-CP or PMI-CPMAI — 30 PDUs in three years. 18 Education, with 4 in each Talent Triangle area. Giving Back capped at 12. Half the numbers of the 60-PDU group, same shape. CAPM — 15 PDUs in three years. 9 Education, with 2 in each Talent Triangle area. Giving Back capped at 6. One good course clears it. Can I use the same PDUs for two certifications? Partly, and the part that carries over is the part people find hardest to earn. PMI's handbook says it plainly: "Since Power Skills and Business Acumen concepts are broader educational topics and not specific to any one certification domain area, the PDUs claimed in these education areas can be applied across all certifications." Hold PMP and PgMP together? One 60-PDU bundle with 8 in each area closes both cycles. Power Skills and Business Acumen — count towards every PMI certification you hold. Earn 8 of each once and both your PMP and your PgMP are covered for those areas. Ways of Working — specific to the certification it was earned for. The one exception: all Ways of Working PDUs count towards PMP, whatever certification they were registered against. Giving Back — applies across all certifications, up to each one's cap. What about PMI-PMOCP and Disciplined Agile? PMI-PMOCP — runs on a three-year cycle with 60 PDUs, but PMI publishes a different Education split for it. It has been left out of the breakdown above rather than print a number that cannot yet be confirmed with PMI. Check your CCRS dashboard, which shows the exact requirement for your credential.Disciplined Agile — DASM, DASSM, DAC and DAVSC renew every year with 7 PDUs in agile topics. They use PDUs but run on a different program and are not part of the CCR requirements above. Where do I check my own numbers? Your CCRS dashboard at PMI shows the PDUs you have reported, split by area, against the requirement for each certification you hold. It is the only place that knows your cycle dates. Track everything in one place with the free PDU log template. It does the 8-8-8 arithmetic for you. Log in to CCRS — go to ccrs.pmi.org and sign in with your PMI account. Open the dashboard — each certification shows a bar for total PDUs and one for each Talent Triangle area. Find the gap — the area with the smallest bar is the one to fill first. It is almost always Power Skills or Business Acumen. Who checked these numbers? Kavita Sharma. She holds the PMP and the PgMP, renews both herself, and has coached PMP, PgMP and PMI-ACP candidates since 2014. Her courses are registered with PMI, so the PDUs come with claim codes. You can have 20 in Power Skills and 8 in the other two and still renew, as long as the total Education is 35 or more. No. The minimums are inside the Education requirement. Giving Back is counted separately and capped. Each certification keeps its own requirement and its own cycle. What changes is how much overlap you get: Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs count for all of them, so the extra work for a second certification is usually only Ways of Working. The day you passed the exam. It ends on the same date three years later. Your CCRS dashboard shows both dates. No. PMI applies the same CCR rules everywhere. Only the renewal fee differs by membership status, not by country. In the Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook, which PMI updates from time to time. This page reflects the April 2026 edition … - [Talent Triangle minimums](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/talent-triangle/): Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen: at least 8 PDUs in each for a PMP renewal. - [How to earn PDUs](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/how-to-earn-pdus/): Every way that counts, free and paid; at most 25 PDUs from Giving Back. Education · Giving Back · free and paid · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026 How do I earn PDUs? One PDU is one hour of learning about project, program or portfolio work, or one hour of giving back to the profession. You earn them from courses, webinars, reading, podcasts, training at work, chapter events, volunteering, mentoring and the job itself. Most of your PDUs must be Education, and the Talent Triangle minimums can only be met with Education. Every way to earn them, with the limits, is below. What counts as a PDU? PMI counts time, not certificates. One hour of qualifying activity is one PDU, claimed in quarter-hour steps. Every PDU belongs to one of two groups, and the group decides what it can be used for. What are Education PDUs? Learning. Courses, webinars, reading, podcasts, structured training at work, conferences. They carry a Talent Triangle tag, so they are the only PDUs that count towards the minimums in each area. At least 35 of your 60 must be Education (18 of 30, 9 of 15). You can do all of them this way. What are Giving Back PDUs? Contributing. Working as a practitioner, volunteering, mentoring, presenting, writing. They count towards your total but carry no Talent Triangle tag and are capped: 25 of 60, 12 of 30, 6 of 15. Working as a practitioner is capped again inside that, at 8, 4 and 2. How can I earn Education PDUs? Six ways. The first is the only one that reliably fills the Power Skills and Business Acumen minimums. Do online courses count? Yes. A course registered with PMI comes with a claim code and a declared split, for example 8 Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills, 8 Business Acumen. Report it with the code and it is accepted straight away. This is how most people earn all 60. Do webinars count? Yes, one PDU per hour. PMI's own webinars, chapter webinars and training-company webinars all count. Most are tagged Ways of Working. Keep the confirmation email; you may need it in an audit. Do books, podcasts and videos count? Yes. PMI calls this informal learning. Report the hours you spent and the area the content belongs to. Be honest with the hours; PMI asks for a short description of what you learned. Does training at work count? Yes, when it is a structured session on a relevant topic: a leadership workshop, a finance-for-managers class, an agile bootcamp. Keep the agenda and your attendance record. Do chapter meetings and conferences count? Yes. PMI chapter events, PMI conferences and industry conferences with project content. One PDU per hour of session time, in the area the session covered. Do university and college courses count? Yes. A relevant academic course counts hour for hour, including a degree module in management, finance or leadership. Keep the transcript or completion letter. How can I earn Giving Back PDUs? Four ways. They top up your total; they never fill a Talent Triangle minimum. Do I get PDUs for doing my job? Yes. Working as a practitioner earns a capped number each cycle: 8 for the 60-PDU certifications, 4 for the 30-PDU ones, 2 for CAPM. Claim it once a year. Does volunteering count? Yes. Unpaid work for a PMI chapter, a professional body or a non-profit, using your project skills. One PDU per hour. Does mentoring count? Yes. Mentoring or coaching other project managers, formally or informally, one PDU per hour. Keep a simple log of dates and topics. Does writing or speaking count? Yes. Creating content, presenting at an event, teaching a session, writing an article. Hours spent preparing and delivering. Can I get PDUs for free? Yes. You can earn a good share of a cycle without paying, if you have the time and keep records. What free PDUs rarely give you is the Power Skills and Business Acumen minimums. Free PDUs arrive one hour at a time from many places, and almost all of them land in Ways of Working. People finish a cycle with 45 PDUs, all in one area, and PMI will not renew them. Start with the free 1-PDU course on how CCR works, then read where to find free PDUs and when free is worth the time. What is the fastest way to earn 60 PDUs? One registered course that delivers the whole number with the Talent Triangle split already worked out. You report it once, with one claim code, and the cycle is closed. I need the whole cycle A 60-PDU bundle for PMP or PgMP, 30 for PMI-ACP, 15 for CAPM. Self-paced, certificate on completion, PMI claim code for every course inside it. Pick my certification I am only short in one or two areas The 24-PDU pack is 8 Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills and 8 Business Acumen. It tells you how many PDUs you still need in total and in each area, and which pack fits. Work out my gap Which PDUs are the hardest to earn? Power Skills and Business Acumen. Both must be Education, and both are thin on the ground compared with anything about methods and tools. Why is Power Skills hard? Leadership, negotiation, feedback and communication are taught on courses, not picked up from webinars about software. Look for a course that names Power Skills in its split. Why is Business Acumen hard? Strategy, benefits and finance content is the rarest thing with a PDU code, and it is the area people notice last, usually a month before the cycle ends. The minimums for every certification, and why Giving Back cannot fill them, are on the Talent Triangle page. Do AI courses count for PDUs? Yes, when the course is about using AI in project, program or portfolio work. A course on prompting for status reports, risk registers and stakeholder updates is Ways of Working; a course on AI strategy and value is Business Acumen. Both are Education, and a registered course states the split. Why your next PDUs should include AI, and what to look for in an AI course: AI skills for project managers. How do I prove my PDUs if PMI audits me? PMI audits a sample of renewals. Keep evidence for every claim until 18 months after your cycle ends. 1. Keep the certificate For a course or webinar, the certificate or completion email with the provider name, date and hours. 2. Keep a note for informal learning For books, podcasts and work training: title, date, hours, and two lines on what you learned. Your CCRS entry asks for this anyway. 3. Keep one log One spreadsheet with every claim, its area and where the evidence is. The free PDU log template is built for this. Questions people ask about earning PDUs Yes. There is no rule against it, as long as the course is Education and its split covers the 8 in each Talent Triangle area. Most people renew this way because it is one report and one claim code. One. PDUs are hours of activity, claimed in quarter-hour steps. A 90-minute webinar is 1.5 PDUs. Yes, as informal learning under Education. Claim the hours you actually spent, choose the Talent Triangle area the book belongs to, and write a short note on what you learned. Yes, if the session was structured and on a relevant topic. Claim it as Education, in the area it covered, and keep the agenda and attendance record. No. You report the activity and PMI accepts it, usually immediately for a registered course. You only produce the evidence if PMI audits you, which is why you keep it for 18 months after the cycle ends. PDUs count for the cycle in which you earned them. Report them before that cycle ends. Your CCRS dashboard shows your cycle dates and what has been accepted so far. Who checked this? Kavita Sharma. She holds the PMP and the PgMP, renews both herself, and has coached PMP, PgMP and PMI-ACP candidates since 2014. Her courses are registered with PMI, so every PDU comes with a declared split and a claim code. … - [How to report PDUs in CCRS](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/report-pdus-in-ccrs/): Step by step, with claim codes and audits; about 1 min per pre-approved code. CCRS · claim codes · audits · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026 How do I report PDUs in CCRS? Log in at ccrs.pmi.org, choose Report PDUs, pick the category, enter the activity and the hours by Talent Triangle area, agree to the statement and submit. A course reported with its PMI claim code fills in the details for you and is accepted straight away. Self-reported activities are accepted on submission and may be audited later. The whole thing takes about five minutes per claim. The steps, with the mistakes that get claims rejected, are below. What do I need before I start? Three things. Have them open in another tab and each claim is a copy-and-paste job. Your PMI login The same email and password you use on PMI.org. CCRS is at ccrs.pmi.org, or through myPMI. The PMI mobile app reports PDUs too. The claim code, for a registered course A course registered with PMI comes with a code on the certificate or in the completion email. It fills in the provider, title and Talent Triangle split for you. The details, for everything else Provider or organisation, activity title, start and end dates, hours in quarter-hour steps, the Talent Triangle area, and two lines on what you learned. How do I report a course that has a claim code? This is the fast path. Five clicks and the claim is accepted. 1. Log in and choose Report PDUs Go to ccrs.pmi.org, sign in, and click Report PDUs on the dashboard. 2. Pick Education, then Course or Training Education is the group; Course or Training is the category for any registered course, online or in a classroom. 3. Enter the claim code Type or paste the code from your certificate. CCRS fills in the provider, the course title and the PDU split by area. 4. Check the dates and the split Enter the dates you took the course. Confirm the Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen numbers match the certificate. Do not change them. 5. Agree and submit Tick the statement that the claim is accurate and submit. The status shows as approved almost at once, and your dashboard bars move. Hold two certifications? Report once. CCRS applies the PDUs to every certification they count for. Power Skills and Business Acumen count for all of them. How do I report a webinar, a book or a podcast? These are self-reported. The steps are the same, you just type the details yourself. Webinars and events Education, then Course or Training for a webinar, or Organization Meetings for a chapter event or conference. Enter the provider, the title, the date, the hours and the area the content covered. Keep the confirmation email. Books, podcasts, videos and articles Education, then Read or Informal Learning. Enter the title, the dates, the hours you actually spent, the area, and a short description of what you learned. This description is what an auditor reads. How do I report Giving Back PDUs? Choose Giving Back instead of Education. These count towards your total, up to the cap, and never towards a Talent Triangle minimum. Work as a Practitioner One claim a year for doing your job. Capped at 8 per cycle for the 60-PDU certifications, 4 for the 30-PDU ones, 2 for CAPM. Volunteer or Mentor Enter the organisation, what you did, the dates and the hours. Keep a log; there is no certificate for this. Create Content or Present Title of the article, talk or session, the date, and the hours you spent preparing and delivering. How do I know my renewal is complete? Your CCRS dashboard tells you. Watch the bars, then finish the renewal. 1. All bars reach the line The total bar and the three Talent Triangle bars each have a line for the minimum. When every one is met, CCRS says you are eligible to renew. 2. Apply the PDUs and pay the fee Click the renew prompt, confirm the PDUs apply to this cycle, and pay PMI's renewal fee. The fee is lower for PMI members. 3. A new cycle starts PMI confirms by email and your next three-year cycle begins on the day the old one ends, not the day you paid. Can I watch it being done? Four minutes, start to finish, reporting a registered course with its claim code. Why was my PDU claim rejected? Five reasons cover almost every rejection or stalled renewal. One Talent Triangle area is short The total says 60, but one bar is under 8. CCRS will not renew you until that area is filled with Education PDUs. The same course was claimed twice Reporting one course under two names, or once with a code and once by hand, gets the second claim removed and can trigger an audit. Hours do not match the activity Eight PDUs for a one-hour webinar, or a 40-hour book. Claim the hours you spent, in quarter-hour steps. The wrong category A course filed under Giving Back, or volunteering filed under Education, is corrected or rejected. Education is learning; Giving Back is contributing. Over the Giving Back cap Anything above 25 Giving Back (12 or 6 for the smaller certifications) is simply not counted, however many hours you did. Not sure where you stand? Put your dashboard numbers into the PDU calculator and it shows the gap in total and by area. What happens if PMI audits me? PMI audits a random sample of renewals. You get an email asking for evidence of the claims you made. It is routine, and it is easy if you kept records. Keep evidence for 18 months after your cycle ends. Certificates and completion emails for courses and webinars. A dated note with hours and what you learned for reading and podcasts. A log of dates and topics for mentoring and volunteering. One spreadsheet that lists every claim and where its evidence is. The free PDU log template is built for exactly this. Questions people ask about reporting PDUs A course reported with its PMI claim code is approved almost immediately. A self-reported activity is accepted on submission and may be picked for audit later, so keep the evidence. Yes, and you should. Report each activity as soon as you finish it. PDUs apply to the cycle you are in when you earn them, and reporting early gives you time to fix a short area. You pay it in CCRS, at the renewal step, once every requirement is met. There is nothing to report; the payment completes the renewal. No. Report it once. CCRS applies the PDUs to every certification they count for. Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs count for all your certifications; Ways of Working PDUs count for the certification the course was registered against, and always for PMP. Yes. The PMI mobile app has a Report PDUs option that does the same thing as CCRS on the website. On the certificate or in the completion email from the course provider. If you cannot find it, ask the provider; a registered course always has one. Never give anyone your PMI login so they can report for you. Who checked these steps? Kavita Sharma. She holds the PMP and the PgMP, reports her own PDUs in CCRS every cycle, and has coached PMP, PgMP and PMI-ACP candidates since 2014. Her courses are registered with PMI, so every one comes with a claim code and a declared split. Every course in our renewal packs comes with its PMI claim code and its split, so reporting is copy and paste. - [PDU deadlines](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/pdu-deadlines/): Cycle end, 90-day window, 12-month suspension, expiry. Kavita Sharma, PMP, PgMP · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026 · last reviewed September 2026 What happens if I miss my PDU deadline? Your certification goes into suspended status on the day your cycle ends. The suspension runs 12 months, and you are reinstated the moment you report the missing PDUs and pay the renewal fee. Let those 12 months pass and the certification expires, and the only way back is a new application, the fees again and the exam. The 90-day window you may have read about is for the payment only, and only if your PDUs were already reported before your cycle ended. Am I late on the PDUs, or late on the fee? These are two different situations with two different deadlines, and most pages on the internet mix them up. Find yours before you do anything else, because one of them is a formality and the other is a countdown. My PDUs are reported. I have not paid. PMI accepts the renewal fee as late as 90 days after your cycle end date. Pay inside that window and your record renews normally, so there is nothing to fix and nothing to explain later. This is the only grace period in the CCR programme. It covers the money, never the learning. My PDUs are short. There is no extra time for PDUs. The handbook requires them earned and reported before the cycle end date, so a PDU gap on the last day puts you straight into suspended status. Your deadline is no longer 90 days. It is the 12-month suspension window described below, and that is the one to work to. What are the stages after the deadline? PMI records every certification in one of four states. Nothing here is a judgement call by a reviewer, so you can work out exactly where you stand from your cycle end date alone. UP TO YOUR CYCLE END DATE Active PDUs reported and fee paid. Your next three years begin the day the old cycle finished, so renewing early costs you nothing. 90 DAYS AFTER CYCLE END Fee still outstanding Open only if the PDUs were already in. Pay within the 90 days and you stay active, so this one is a card payment, not a crisis. 12 MONTHS Suspended You may not use the designation. PDUs you earn now still count towards the same requirement, so the work you do in this window is not wasted. AFTER THE 12 MONTHS Expired CCRS stops accepting your PDUs and you are no longer a certification holder. Coming back means the application, the fees and the exam again. Nobody sends you a warning at the halfway point. Suspension and expiry both happen on a date, not after a review, so the only thing standing between the two is you opening CCRS. Put your cycle end date in your calendar with a reminder a year out and this page never applies to you again. What does being suspended actually cost me? Three real consequences, and the third one is the expensive one that almost nobody mentions. The letters come off While you are suspended you may not call yourself a certification holder or use the designation, so your LinkedIn headline, your email signature, your CV and any bid document that carries the letters are all wrong until you are reinstated. You drop off the public registry PMI lists active holders in its online Certification Registry. A client, an employer or a tender reviewer who checks you during the suspension finds nothing, and you are the one who has to explain it. Your next cycle is already running The suspension sits on top of your next three years rather than pausing them. Six months suspended is six months of the next cycle gone before you have reported a single PDU towards it, so waiting makes the following cycle harder, not just this one. Does my next cycle date move if I renew late? No. PMI keeps your original anniversary, whether you renew on time, on the last day of the 90 days, or in month eleven of a suspension. The end date of your next cycle was fixed the day you passed the exam, so the only variable you control is how much of that cycle you spend suspended. What happens if my certification has already expired? There is no PDU route back. Once the 12-month suspension passes without a completed renewal, PMI stops accepting PDUs against that certification and you are treated as a new candidate: a fresh application, the associated fees again, and the exam itself. That is worth reading twice if you are currently suspended, because the difference between the two situations is a few hours of learning and a renewal fee on one side, and an exam on the other. The cheap window is the one you are standing in. Still inside the 12 months Earn the PDUs you are short, report them, pay the fee. You are reinstated with the same credential and nothing to declare later. Past the 12 months Reapply, prove your eligibility again, pay the fees and sit the exam. PDUs cannot be carried into that application. Can PMI give me more time? Sometimes. The handbook carries an extenuating circumstances clause: if something genuinely prevented you from completing the renewal, you contact PMI Customer Care and PMI reviews the claim on its own facts. Illness, bereavement, military deployment and similar events are what the clause exists for. Nothing is promised and there is no form that grants an extension automatically, so treat it as a conversation to start rather than a safety net to rely on. Raise it while the window is still open. A request made after expiry is asking PMI to undo a status change rather than to prevent one. What do I do today? Three steps, and the first one takes two minutes. 1. Read two numbers in CCRS Sign in and note your cycle end date and how many PDUs you still owe. Until you have those two numbers everything else is guesswork, and most people find the gap smaller than they feared. How many PDUs am I still short? 2. Close the gap with PDUs that carry a claim code A course registered with PMI comes with its own code, so the PDUs land on your dashboard the same day instead of sitting in a self-reported queue while your window shrinks. Which pack closes my gap? 3. Report them, then pay Enter each code in CCRS, check the total clears your requirement, and submit the renewal fee. Reinstatement follows the payment, so the last click is the one that ends the suspension. How do I report PDUs in CCRS? Questions people ask after they miss the date No. The handbook requires your PDUs to be earned and reported before your cycle end date. The only extension PMI publishes is the 90 days for submitting the renewal fee, and it applies after the PDU requirement has already been met. Twelve months from your cycle end date. You are not held for the full twelve if you finish sooner: reporting the missing PDUs and paying the fee reinstates you on the day you do it. No. During suspension you may not refer to yourself as a certification holder or use the designation, and PMI's public Certification Registry lists active holders only. Yes. PDUs earned in the suspension period count towards the requirement that lifts it, so nothing you learn in that window is wasted. No. Your cycle dates do not move. The suspension period overlaps your next cycle, which means a late reinstatement leaves you less time to earn the next set of PDUs. You reapply. That means a new application, the associated fees and retaking the examination. PDUs cannot reinstate an expired certification. You can raise extenuating circumstances with PMI Customer Care, and PMI reviews each claim case by case. It is a request, not an entitlement, so make it while your window is still open. Yes. The statuses, the 90-day fee window, the twelve-month suspension and the expiry rule are identical across the PMI certifications. Only the PDU totals differ. The Disciplined Agile certifications sit outside this programme on their own one-year cycle of 7 PDUs. Who is answering this? Kavita Sharma. PDU calculator · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026 How many PDUs do I still need? Pick your certification, type in the PDUs you already have, and see exactly what is missing in each Talent Triangle area. Then pick the pack that closes the gap. What do I still need for my certification? Use the numbers from your CCRS dashboard. Enter your total so far, then the Education PDUs you hold in each Talent Triangle area. The pack that closes your gap appears underneath. Not sure of your numbers? Log in to CCRS; the dashboard shows your PDUs by area for every certification you hold. Or track them yourself with the free PDU log template. How does the calculator work out my gap? Does it check each area? Yes. It compares what you have in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen against the minimum for your certification, and shows the shortfall in each. Does Giving Back count towards the areas? No, and the calculator follows that rule. Giving Back counts towards your total only, up to the cap for your certification. Why is the total not just 60 minus what I have? Because the area minimums can push the number up. If you have 55 PDUs but none in Business Acumen, you still need 8 more Education PDUs, not 5. Questions people ask about PDU gaps One of the three Talent Triangle areas is below its minimum, or fewer than the required number are Education. PMI checks all of those, not just the total. The area bars show where the shortfall is. No. Only your CCRS dashboard knows those. This page tells you how many PDUs are missing, not how long you have to earn them. Run it once for each. Power Skills and Business Acumen Education PDUs count for both, so the second run usually shows a smaller gap than you expect. Which 60 PDU bundle should I choose? By Kavita Sharma, PMI-ATP • Contributor to PMBOK® Guide 6 & 8 • Last updated: July 2026 QUICK ANSWER: PMP renewal has two costs: PMI's renewal fee — US$60 for members or US$150 for non-members — and whatever you spend earning your 60 PDUs. PDUs can cost $0 (free webinars, reading, volunteering) up to a few hundred dollars for a premium bundle. Because non-members pay $90 more just to renew, PMI membership often pays for itself. The two costs of renewing your PMP 1. The PMI renewal fee — paid once per three-year cycle when you complete renewal in CCRS: Status Renewal fee PMI member US$60 Non-member US$150 2. The cost of your 60 PDUs — this varies enormously: PDU route Typical cost Trade-off Free webinars, reading, volunteering $0 Time-intensive; you track everything Budget 60-PDU bundle ~$99 Fast, but check quality and full coverage Premium bundle (renew + real skill) ~$150–200 Fast + you learn something useful Should you become a PMI member? Membership costs an annual fee, but it cuts your renewal fee by $90 ($60 vs $150), unlocks free member PDUs, and discounts other PMI services. If you'll renew and use any member benefits, membership frequently nets out cheaper — and it makes the "all-free PDUs" route far more practical. The cheapest realistic way to renew Be a PMI member (lower renewal fee + free PDUs). Earn free PDUs from member webinars, reading, and volunteering — but track the Talent Triangle minimums (8 each). Pay only the $60 renewal fee. Total: as little as the $60 fee plus your membership — if you have the time to assemble and log 60 free PDUs correctly. The fastest way (worth the small spend) If your renewal date is close, or you'd rather not hunt for scattered free hours, a pre-approved 60-PDU bundle covers all 60 PDUs, guarantees the Talent Triangle minimums, and comes with guided reporting. For the complete walkthrough, read How to Earn 60 PDUs Towards PMP Renewal in 2026. Frequently asked questions At minimum, PMI's renewal fee: $60 for members, $150 for non-members. On top of that, your PDUs cost anywhere from $0 (free sources) to ~$200 (a premium bundle). No — it's paid once per three-year cycle, when you complete renewal after earning 60 PDUs. It enters a one-year suspension, then expires — after which you'd have to retake the exam (far more expensive). Renew before your cycle ends. For most PMs, yes: the $90 lower renewal fee plus free member PDUs and course discounts typically exceed the membership cost. Confirm current fees on PMI.org. - [Suspended PMP](https://kavitasharma.net/pmp-suspended-how-long/): The 12-month suspension window and how to get back to Active. My PMP Is Suspended — How Long Do I Have? If you missed your renewal deadline, PMI suspends your certification for up to one year while you finish the requirement. Nothing is lost yet, and PDUs earned during suspension still count. If the year passes unmet, the certification expires — reinstating it means a new application, the exam fee, and retaking the exam. The day you pass the exam Your three-year CCR cycle begins the day you pass the certification exam, not the day the certificate arrives or is activated. No maximum Education PDUs have no ceiling on any credential — there is only ever a minimum. Every PDU in a cycle may be Education if that is how you choose to earn them. 25 PDUs Giving Back is capped at 25 PDUs and is optional. How long is my PMP suspended for? PMI does not cancel your certification the moment you miss your renewal date. Instead it enters a suspended state for up to one year, giving you time to finish the PDUs you owe. This is a grace period, not a penalty phase — any PDU you earn while suspended still counts toward the 60 PDUs your three-year cycle required. That one year sits on top of your original continuing certification requirements (CCR) cycle, which runs three years from the date you earned or last renewed the credential. So if you did nothing at all from the day you passed the exam, the absolute outer limit before the certification lapses for good is the three-year cycle plus the one-year suspension. Log into your CCRS account to see your own exact suspension end date — it will not be the same for everyone. What happens if the year passes without the requirement being met? If the one-year suspension period ends and the PDU requirement is still unmet, the certification expires. At that point it is gone — this is different from being suspended, and there is no further grace period attached to expiration itself. Reinstating an expired PMP is not a matter of finishing the PDUs you were missing and picking up where you left off. PMI treats it as starting over: a new application, the exam fee again, and retaking the exam. This is the reason the one-year suspension window matters so much — it is the last point at which finishing your PDUs is enough on its own. What exactly do I need to complete before the suspension ends? For the PMP, the underlying requirement is 60 PDUs per three-year cycle, and at least 35 of those must be Education PDUs — structured, taught learning rather than volunteer or professional work. There is no ceiling on Education PDUs, so if you are short on time, all 60 can come from Education if that is the fastest path available to you. Giving Back PDUs — things like volunteering or mentoring — are capped at 25 and are entirely optional; you can skip that category and still renew. Inside the 35 required Education PDUs, PMI wants a minimum of 8 PDUs in each of the three Talent Triangle areas — Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. That fixes 24 of the 35, leaving 11 Education PDUs you can place in whichever of the three areas you like. If you are unsure how many PDUs you already have logged versus how many you still owe, the (https://kavitasharma.net/pmp-renewal-60-pdu-guide/) guide walks through the full 60-PDU breakdown, and the (https://kavitasharma.net/pmi-talent-triangle-pdu-minimums/) page explains the 8-PDU minimums in more detail. Questions people ask Yes. PDUs earned during the one-year suspension period count toward the 60 PDUs due for your cycle — the suspension does not reset or void anything you have already logged or are still earning. Your three-year CCR cycle began the day you passed the certification exam, not the day the certificate arrived or was activated — check that exam date, then count three years forward to find your original deadline. The suspension itself is not PMP-specific, though the PDU totals it applies to differ by credential: CAPM needs 15 PDUs per three-year cycle, PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need 30, and PgMP, PfMP, and PMI-PBA need 60, the same as PMP. No. Education PDUs have no maximum on any credential — there is only ever a minimum — so if you need to close the gap quickly, every PDU in your cycle can come from Education. Last reviewed: September 2026 - [Do PDUs carry over?](https://kavitasharma.net/pdus/carry-over-next-cycle/): Up to 20 PDUs from the final 12 months of a cycle can carry into the next PMP cycle. No. Each three-year cycle requires its own set of PDUs, counted from the date your current cycle began: 60 for PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA; 30 for PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP; 15 for CAPM. PDUs earned above that number in one cycle do not carry forward into the next. 30 PDUs to renew PMI-ACP or PMI-RMP PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need 30 PDUs every three years, of which at least 18 must be Education. 15 PDUs to renew CAPM CAPM needs 15 PDUs every three years, of which at least 9 must be Education. 3 years A continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. Do unused PDUs carry over to my next cycle? No. A continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed, and the PDU requirement resets with it. Whatever you earned above your requirement in the cycle that just closed stays in that cycle. It does not get added to the fresh three-year period that starts the moment you renew. This means the number you owe on day one of a new cycle is the full requirement for your credential, not the full requirement minus whatever surplus you built up before. If you finished your last cycle with, say, ten extra PDUs, those ten do not reduce what you need to earn in the new cycle. How many PDUs do I need for my credential? The requirement is set per credential, and it applies fresh to every three-year cycle: PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA: 60 PDUs every three years PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP: 30 PDUs every three years, of which at least 18 must be Education CAPM: 15 PDUs every three years, of which at least 9 must be Education What counts toward this cycle's requirement, and what doesn't roll forward Within a 60-PDU cycle, the categories have their own limits, and none of them roll into the next cycle either. At least 35 of the 60 PDUs must be Education, and Education has no ceiling, so it is possible for all 60 to be Education. Giving Back PDUs are optional and capped at 25 in a 60-PDU cycle, so you cannot lean on Giving Back for more than 25 of the total even if you have the time to earn more. Inside the 35 Education PDUs, a minimum of 8 must sit in each of the three Talent Triangle areas, Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. That fixes 24 of the 35, leaving 11 Education PDUs free to place in whichever area you choose. Extra PDUs earned in any one area beyond what the cycle needs do not transfer to the next cycle's Talent Triangle minimums either. Why plan against the reset rather than a running total Because nothing banks forward, the safer way to track your PDUs is by cycle, not by lifetime total. Note the date your current three-year cycle started, note the requirement for your specific credential, and check your progress against that window rather than against everything you have ever logged. If your cycle is close to its three-year mark and you are short, the fix has to come from PDUs earned inside this cycle. PDUs you plan to earn after renewal belong to the next cycle and cannot be applied backward to close a gap in this one. If you hold CAPM and want the exact split of Education and non-Education PDUs required to renew, see how many PDUs do I need to renew my CAPM? For the full breakdown of the 8-PDU minimums across Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, see how many PDUs do I need in each Talent Triangle area? Closing out a cycle that is running short If your current cycle is nearing its three-year end and you have not reached your requirement, the PDUs need to come from activity you complete before that date, not after. For a PMP, PgMP, PfMP or PMI-PBA holder working against the 60-PDU requirement, that means checking the 35-PDU Education minimum, the 8-PDU minimums in each Talent Triangle area, and the 25-PDU Giving Back cap before assuming any single course or activity will close the gap. Questions people ask Three years, counted from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. Yes. The minimum is 35 Education PDUs out of 60, but Education has no ceiling, so all 60 can be Education. At least 18 of the 30 required PDUs must be Education. At least 9 of the 15 required PDUs must be Education. Yes, in a 60-PDU cycle, Giving Back is capped at 25 PDUs and is optional. You only need to match one. Every pathway also needs the same 35 hours of training. Nothing else on this page changes that. Your education Experience leading projects Training High school diploma / GED 60 months (5 years) 35 hours Associate degree / vocational / trade 48 months (4 years) 35 hours Bachelor’s degree or higher 36 months (3 years) 35 hours Bachelor’s or post-graduate degree from a PMI GAC programme 24 months (2 years) 35 hours A master’s or MBA doesn’t reduce the requirement below the bachelor’s line unless the programme itself is GAC-accredited — in which case it does, because PMI accepts both bachelor’s and post-graduate GAC degrees. And all experience must fall within the last 10 years; the checker above handles that for you. The question everybody actually has “But does my experience count?” Find your situation. Each one tells you the answer and — more usefully — how to word it on the application. PMI has no list of approved job titles. The application asks what you were responsible for. If you set the plan, chased the dependencies, managed the stakeholders and were the person asked “when will it be done?” — you led a project, whatever HR called you. How to word it“Led a cross-functional team of 9 to deliver a warehouse management rollout across 4 sites. Owned the schedule, budget tracking, vendor coordination and go-live decision.” Yes — the current exam is roughly half agile and hybrid, and PMI expects agile experience. Write in delivery language, not ceremony language. “Facilitated stand-ups” describes a calendar invite; “led delivery of X across Y sprints, managing scope, risk and stakeholders” describes a project. How to word it“Led delivery of the customer portal across 14 sprints. Managed backlog priorities with the product owner, removed impediments, ran release planning, and reported progress to the steering group.” Counts when you were accountable for delivery, not only for what got built. If you owned dates, dependencies and the release, that’s project leadership. If you wrote requirements and someone else drove delivery, it’s weaker — lead with the releases you personally shipped. Extremely common, and perfectly acceptable. The trap is describing your function instead of your leadership. Don’t write “gathered requirements”. Write what you were accountable for delivering, to whom, and by when. How to word it“Owned end-to-end delivery of the payments integration: planned the phases, coordinated 3 vendors, tracked risk, and delivered UAT sign-off two weeks early.” Counts. PMI measures calendar months during which you led a project, not billable hours or headcount. Self-employed applicants list a client contact as the reference rather than a manager. PMI’s own instruction is blunt: “Don’t double-count time for projects that overlapped.” Two projects across the same three months is three months of experience, not six. This is the single most common reason a confident application fails audit — and the checker at the top of this page does the maths for you. PMI counts experience from the last 10 years only. Anything older stops counting — which means an application you could have made a few years ago may no longer work, and every month you wait, the oldest month drops off the back. Waiting is not free. No problem at all. PMI wants total months of project leadership within the window — it never asks for them to be continuous. A gap for parenting, study, illness or a career change costs you nothing. The PMP is deliberately industry-neutral. Construction, pharma, events, education, manufacturing, banking, NGO programmes, government schemes — all count. Write in plain language rather than industry jargon, because the reviewer may not know your sector. The test is whether it was temporary, had a defined outcome, and ended. An office relocation, an ERP migration, a compliance programme, a new product launch — all projects. Ongoing operations, support rotas and BAU are not, however well you ran them. Military and government projects count without question. Volunteer work needs one extra test: PMI’s wording is “managed projects in a professional setting”, so a formal, accountable role on a real NGO or association project counts — helping out informally does not. If you held a defined role, had a sponsor and were answerable for delivery, list it. Whichever it is, translate rank and internal terminology into plain project language. The person reading it will not know your organisation’s vocabulary and cannot give you credit for what they can’t understand. Honest answer: task-level contribution inside someone else’s plan isn’t what PMI is asking for. But look harder before you accept that verdict — most people have led something and simply never called it a project. And if you’re genuinely not there yet, the CAPM route exists precisely for you. Watch instead Every eligibility question, answered in 8 minutes If you’d rather be walked through it than read. PMP Audit The audit is paperwork. It is not a judgement on you. A small share of applications are picked at random. Nothing you do makes it more or less likely — so stop optimising for it and just keep your records tidy. 1 Proof of education A scan of your degree certificate or a transcript. That’s it. 2 Proof of training The certificate for your 35 hours. A colleague or client is fine — it does not have to be your manager. 4 You get 90 days Which is a long time. The people who struggle are the ones who wait 80 of them before starting. “My manager left / the company shut down.” Then ask a peer, a client, a vendor or anyone else who was on the project and can confirm you were there. PMI’s question is whether a real person can verify the work happened — not whether that person is still your boss. The PgMP® (Program Management Professional) is the Project Management Institute's certification for program managers — professionals who direct multiple related projects, managed together, to deliver benefits no single project could achieve alone. It sits above the PMP® in PMI's ladder and is one of the rarest credentials in the profession. Related components, one strategic outcome. Scale isn't the difference — intent is. A project delivers an output. A program exists to deliver measurable business benefits. Only a few thousand professionals hold the PgMP worldwide — versus more than a million PMP® holders. PgMP Eligibility Criteria To qualify for the PgMP, every candidate needs two types of experience: Project Management Experience: 4 years (or an active PMP®) earned within the last 15 years. This is the same for everyone. Program Management Experience: 3 to 7 years. The exact time required depends entirely on your highest level of education. Your education Project management experience Program management experience Secondary / high-school diploma 4 years (or active PMP®) 7 years Bachelor's degree or higher 4 years (or active PMP®) 4 years Bachelor's from a GAC-accredited program 3 years (or active PMP®) 3 years GAC = PMI's Global Accreditation Center. If your degree is from a GAC-accredited program (check PMI's GAC directory), your requirement drops to 3 + 3 years  The 15-year rule: all experience must fall within the last 15 years. And your PMP® counts as the entire project-management requirement — most candidates already have this half done. Can I do PgMP without PMP? Yes, you can earn the PgMP without holding a PMP®. To fulfill the project management requirement, PMI accepts either 4 years of project management experience (within the last 15 years) or an active PMP® certification. Think of the PMP® as a convenient shortcut to meet this requirement, rather than a mandatory prerequisite. More eligibility questions people ask Yes. PMI evaluates what you did, not what your badge said. Delivery Managers, Senior PMs, PMO leads and Transformation leads qualify regularly — if they directed multiple related projects toward one business outcome and can describe that ownership in program language. Experience where you were responsible for a group of related projects managed in a coordinated way to achieve benefits — setting direction, managing interdependencies, engaging senior stakeholders, and owning outcomes. Running several unrelated projects side by side is portfolio work, not program experience. The two requirements are assessed separately, and the safest applications show distinct, non-overlapping periods for each. If your roles blended both, describe clearly which responsibilities were project-level and which were program-level in each period. No degree is mandatory. With a secondary/high-school diploma you can still earn the PgMP — you'll need 7 years of program management experience instead of 4. A bachelor's degree reduces the requirement; a GAC-accredited bachelor's reduces it further to 3 years. Only experience from the last 15 years counts toward PgMP eligibility. A program you ran 16 years ago has expired for application purposes — even though the judgment you gained from it will still help you in the exam. Yes, and they are among the most common successful profiles. What matters is demonstrated program-level ownership: coordinating related projects, managing benefits, and answering to sponsors — regardless of the title on the visiting card. Before you are approved to sit for the exam, a panel of PgMP-certified program managers rigorously evaluates your experience summaries. For many candidates, this application stage—not the exam itself—is the biggest hurdle where their journey stalls. Experience summaries in program language. This is where most rejections happen. A written evaluation by PgMP-certified panelists. Typically around 60 days. 170 questions · 240 minutes · situational judgment at program level. Then 60 PDUs every 3 years keeps the credential active. Is the PgMP panel review an interview? No — the PgMP panel review is not an interview. It is a written evaluation in which volunteer PgMP-certified program managers assess your experience summaries. There is no call and no meeting; you submit your application, and the panel typically completes its review in about 60 days. Why do PgMP applications get rejected? The most common reasons: experience written at project level instead of program level, "we" language instead of clear personal ownership, benefits with no measurable numbers, and summaries that don't fully answer PMI's prompts. Industry mentors report roughly 40–50% of first attempts are rejected — PMI does not publish an official figure. Almost every rejection is a framing problem, not an experience problem. More application & panel review questions Through PMI's online certification portal: create your profile, document your project and program experience, and write experience summaries responding to PMI's prompts. After payment, your application goes to the panel review. Budget serious writing time — the summaries are evaluated, not skimmed. Typically around 60 days from submission. Combined with the initial completeness check and exam scheduling, plan for roughly 2–3 months between submitting your application and sitting the exam. A panel rejection is not the end. Study the feedback areas, rewrite your summaries in program language — ownership, interdependencies, measurable benefits — and resubmit. Many candidates who fail the panel on the first attempt pass it on a properly reframed second application. PMI randomly audits applications to verify education and experience. You get up to 90 days to submit supporting documents, and your references may receive verification emails directly from PMI. An audit is a process, not an accusation — accurate applications clear it routinely. Write as the person accountable for the program: "I aligned…", "I governed…", "I delivered benefits of…". Name the related projects, the interdependencies you managed, the stakeholders you engaged, and the measurable benefits realized. Project vocabulary — tasks, deliverables, schedules — is the fastest route to rejection. Most working professionals complete the journey in 4–6 months: 3–6 weeks to write a strong application, about 60 days of panel review, and 8–12 weeks of exam preparation (which can overlap with the review period). What is well documented is where candidates struggle: the panel review stage and the situational, program-level judgment style of the questions — both are preparation problems with known solutions. Different, more than harder. The PMP tests whether you know how to run a project; the PgMP tests whether you judge like a program director — benefits, governance, stakeholder trade-offs across multiple projects. The PgMP adds the panel review, which the PMP does not have. Most working professionals prepare in 8–12 weeks. The reading list is short — the Standard for Program Management (5th edition) and the Examination Content Outline — but the exam tests judgment, so mock-exam practice and scenario discussion matter more than re-reading. PgMP Eligibility Check PgMP eligibility requires 4 years of project management experience (or an active PMP credential) plus program management experience that varies by education: 7 years with a secondary diploma, 4 years with a bachelor's degree, or 3 years with a GAC-accredited bachelor's. All experience must fall within the last 15 years. PgMP eligibility calculator Before you commit time or money to a PgMP application, it helps to know where you stand. The eligibility checker on this page asks three questions about your education, your project management background, and your program management background, and gives you an instant, honest read on whether you meet PMI's published criteria. What are the PgMP eligibility requirements? Every pathway to PgMP needs 4 years of project management experience or an active PMP credential, earned within the last 15 years. Your education level determines how much program management experience you need on top of that. Two things most candidates miss: all experience, project and program, must fall within the last 15 years, and holding an active PMP satisfies the entire project management half of the requirement on its own. Secondary or high-school diploma: 4 years project management (or active PMP) plus 7 years program management Bachelor's degree or higher: 4 years project management (or active PMP) plus 4 years program management Bachelor's from a GAC-accredited program: 3 years project management (or active PMP) plus 3 years program management What counts as an "active" PMP for PgMP eligibility? PMI treats your PMP as active only if you are current on its maintenance requirements. That means earning 60 PDUs in your three-year PMP cycle, with at least 35 of those 60 coming from the Education category. If your PMP has lapsed, it no longer satisfies the project management portion of PgMP eligibility, and you would need to document the underlying project management years directly. Questions people ask No, this is a free self-assessment based on PMI's published PgMP eligibility criteria. Only PMI's own application and panel review can formally confirm eligibility; the checker tells you, honestly and instantly, where you stand before you invest in the application. The rules themselves are exact and mirror PMI's published requirements by education and experience. What the checker cannot judge is whether your experience is truly program-level; that is what the panel review evaluates, and where guidance matters most. Do not self-reject. Borderline usually means program-level work described in project words, so map your multi-project experience against what the panel looks for: ownership, interdependencies, and measurable benefits. Yes, in two ways: the panel review evaluates your experience summaries, and PMI randomly audits applications, which may require supporting documents and references within 90 days.
