How many PDUs do I need in each Talent Triangle area?

PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA need at least 8 Education PDUs in each of the three areas. PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP, PMI-CP and PMI-CPMAI need 4 in each. CAPM needs 2 in each. The minimums sit inside your Education PDUs, so volunteering and working as a practitioner cannot fill them. Everything else about the triangle is below.

What is the PMI Talent Triangle?

It is PMI’s way of making sure your renewal PDUs are balanced, not sixty hours of the same thing. Every Education PDU you earn is tagged with one of three areas, and PMI asks for a minimum in each. The three areas were renamed in 2022; the old names still appear on older certificates and course listings.

Ways of Working

Formerly Technical Project Management

How the work gets delivered. Predictive, agile and hybrid methods, scheduling, risk, requirements, quality, tools, and the AI tools now used to run delivery.

Power Skills

Formerly Leadership

How you work with people. Leading teams, communication, negotiation, conflict, coaching, giving feedback, asking better questions, emotional intelligence.

Business Acumen

Formerly Strategic and Business Management

How projects connect to the business. Strategy, benefits, finance, market and industry knowledge, legal and regulatory awareness, organisational change.

How many PDUs do I need in each area?

The minimum depends on which certification you hold. All three groups have the same shape: most of your PDUs must be Education, and inside that Education number a floor applies to each area.

Read it for PMP. 60 PDUs in three years. At least 35 must be Education. Inside those 35, at least 8 Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills and 8 Business Acumen; the other 11 can be any area. The remaining 25 can be Giving Back, or more Education. The minimums are floors, not targets: 20 in Power Skills and 8 in the other two is fine.

Can Giving Back PDUs fill the Talent Triangle minimums?

No, and this is the rule that catches most people at renewal time.

What Giving Back covers

Working as a practitioner, volunteering, mentoring, presenting, and creating content. It counts towards your total, up to a cap of 25 for the 60-PDU certifications, 12 for the 30-PDU ones and 6 for CAPM. It carries no Talent Triangle tag.

Why the minimums need Education

The handbook lists the 8-8-8 under Education PDUs. So the 8 Power Skills and the 8 Business Acumen have to be taught: a course, a webinar, a book, a podcast, structured training at work. Three years of running projects gives you Giving Back PDUs, not Business Acumen ones.

Which area am I most likely to be short in?

Power Skills or Business Acumen. Almost every free webinar, tool tutorial and methodology course is tagged Ways of Working, so that side fills itself. The other two do not.

Ways of Working

Fills itself. Agile, risk, scheduling and software webinars are all tagged here. Most people finish a cycle with far more than 8.

Power Skills

The usual gap. Leadership and communication content exists, but it is rarely what you sit through at work. Look for courses that name Power Skills in their PDU split.

Business Acumen

The other usual gap, and the one people notice last. Strategy, benefits and finance content is thinner on the ground than anything else with a PDU code.

Do Talent Triangle PDUs count for more than one certification?

Two of the three areas do, and they are the two that are hardest to earn.

From the handbook: “Since Power Skills and Business Acumen concepts are broader educational topics and not specific to any one certification domain area, the PDUs claimed in these education areas can be applied across all certifications.”

Power Skills and Business Acumen

Count towards every PMI certification you hold. Earn 8 of each once and your PMP and your PgMP are both covered for those two areas.

Ways of Working

Tied to the certification it was registered against. The exception: every Ways of Working PDU counts towards PMP, whichever certification it was earned for.

What that means in practice

If you hold PMP and PgMP, one course with 8 in each area clears the triangle for both. The only extra work for the second certification is its total.

How do I check my split in CCRS?

Your CCRS dashboard shows a bar for each Talent Triangle area against the minimum, for every certification you hold. It takes a minute and it is the only place that knows your real numbers.

1. Log in to CCRS

Go to ccrs.pmi.org and sign in with your PMI account.

2. Look at the three small bars

Under the total, each area has its own bar. A bar that has not reached the line is a minimum you have not met.

3. Fill the shortest bar first

Pick a course whose PDU split names that area. When you claim it, enter the split exactly as the course states it.

Questions people ask about the Talent Triangle

No. Only the minimums are fixed: 8 in each area for the 60-PDU certifications, 24 in total. The rest of your Education PDUs can sit in any area, and up to 25 of the 60 can be Giving Back.

Ways of Working was Technical Project Management, Power Skills was Leadership, and Business Acumen was Strategic and Business Management. PMI renamed them in 2022. The minimums did not change, and PDUs earned under the old names still count in the matching new area.

The training provider declares the split when it registers the course with PMI, and PMI approves it. A registered course tells you its split up front, for example 8 Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills, 8 Business Acumen. Claim it exactly as stated.

No. Each PDU is tagged with the area the provider registered it under. If you are short in Business Acumen, only Business Acumen PDUs fix it.

PMI will not complete the renewal until every minimum is met, even if your total is well over 60. You earn the missing PDUs in that area, report them, and the renewal goes through. Do this before your cycle end date to avoid suspension.

Yes, with smaller minimums for the smaller certifications: 8 per area for PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA; 4 per area for PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP, PMI-CP and PMI-CPMAI; 2 per area for CAPM.
