What happens if I miss my PDU deadline?

Your certification goes into suspended status on the day your cycle ends. The suspension runs 12 months, and you are reinstated the moment you report the missing PDUs and pay the renewal fee. Let those 12 months pass and the certification expires, and the only way back is a new application, the fees again and the exam. The 90-day window you may have read about is for the payment only, and only if your PDUs were already reported before your cycle ended.

What do I do today?

Am I late on the PDUs, or late on the fee?

These are two different situations with two different deadlines, and most pages on the internet mix them up. Find yours before you do anything else, because one of them is a formality and the other is a countdown.

My PDUs are reported. I have not paid.

PMI accepts the renewal fee as late as 90 days after your cycle end date. Pay inside that window and your record renews normally, so there is nothing to fix and nothing to explain later.

This is the only grace period in the CCR programme. It covers the money, never the learning.

My PDUs are short.

There is no extra time for PDUs. The handbook requires them earned and reported before the cycle end date, so a PDU gap on the last day puts you straight into suspended status.

Your deadline is no longer 90 days. It is the 12-month suspension window described below, and that is the one to work to.

What are the stages after the deadline?

PMI records every certification in one of four states. Nothing here is a judgement call by a reviewer, so you can work out exactly where you stand from your cycle end date alone.

UP TO YOUR CYCLE END DATE

Active

PDUs reported and fee paid. Your next three years begin the day the old cycle finished, so renewing early costs you nothing.

90 DAYS AFTER CYCLE END

Fee still outstanding

Open only if the PDUs were already in. Pay within the 90 days and you stay active, so this one is a card payment, not a crisis.

12 MONTHS

Suspended

You may not use the designation. PDUs you earn now still count towards the same requirement, so the work you do in this window is not wasted.

AFTER THE 12 MONTHS

Expired

CCRS stops accepting your PDUs and you are no longer a certification holder. Coming back means the application, the fees and the exam again.

Nobody sends you a warning at the halfway point. Suspension and expiry both happen on a date, not after a review, so the only thing standing between the two is you opening CCRS. Put your cycle end date in your calendar with a reminder a year out and this page never applies to you again.

What does being suspended actually cost me?

Three real consequences, and the third one is the expensive one that almost nobody mentions.

The letters come off

While you are suspended you may not call yourself a certification holder or use the designation, so your LinkedIn headline, your email signature, your CV and any bid document that carries the letters are all wrong until you are reinstated.

You drop off the public registry

PMI lists active holders in its online Certification Registry. A client, an employer or a tender reviewer who checks you during the suspension finds nothing, and you are the one who has to explain it.

Your next cycle is already running

The suspension sits on top of your next three years rather than pausing them. Six months suspended is six months of the next cycle gone before you have reported a single PDU towards it, so waiting makes the following cycle harder, not just this one.

Does my next cycle date move if I renew late?

No. PMI keeps your original anniversary, whether you renew on time, on the last day of the 90 days, or in month eleven of a suspension. The end date of your next cycle was fixed the day you passed the exam, so the only variable you control is how much of that cycle you spend suspended.

What happens if my certification has already expired?

There is no PDU route back. Once the 12-month suspension passes without a completed renewal, PMI stops accepting PDUs against that certification and you are treated as a new candidate: a fresh application, the associated fees again, and the exam itself.

That is worth reading twice if you are currently suspended, because the difference between the two situations is a few hours of learning and a renewal fee on one side, and an exam on the other. The cheap window is the one you are standing in.

Still inside the 12 months

Earn the PDUs you are short, report them, pay the fee. You are reinstated with the same credential and nothing to declare later.

Past the 12 months

Reapply, prove your eligibility again, pay the fees and sit the exam. PDUs cannot be carried into that application.

Can PMI give me more time?

Sometimes. The handbook carries an extenuating circumstances clause: if something genuinely prevented you from completing the renewal, you contact PMI Customer Care and PMI reviews the claim on its own facts. Illness, bereavement, military deployment and similar events are what the clause exists for.

Nothing is promised and there is no form that grants an extension automatically, so treat it as a conversation to start rather than a safety net to rely on. Raise it while the window is still open. A request made after expiry is asking PMI to undo a status change rather than to prevent one.

Sign in and note your cycle end date and how many PDUs you still owe. Until you have those two numbers everything else is guesswork, and most people find the gap smaller than they feared.

Questions people ask after they miss the date

No. The handbook requires your PDUs to be earned and reported before your cycle end date. The only extension PMI publishes is the 90 days for submitting the renewal fee, and it applies after the PDU requirement has already been met.

Twelve months from your cycle end date. You are not held for the full twelve if you finish sooner: reporting the missing PDUs and paying the fee reinstates you on the day you do it.

No. During suspension you may not refer to yourself as a certification holder or use the designation, and PMI’s public Certification Registry lists active holders only.

Yes. PDUs earned in the suspension period count towards the requirement that lifts it, so nothing you learn in that window is wasted.

Yes. The statuses, the 90-day fee window, the twelve-month suspension and the expiry rule are identical across the PMI certifications. Only the PDU totals differ. The Disciplined Agile certifications sit outside this programme on their own one-year cycle of 7 PDUs.
