PgMP Eligibility Check

PgMP eligibility requires 4 years of project management experience (or an active PMP credential) plus program management experience that varies by education: 7 years with a secondary diploma, 4 years with a bachelor’s degree, or 3 years with a GAC-accredited bachelor’s. All experience must fall within the last 15 years.

PgMP eligibility calculator

Before you commit time or money to a PgMP application, it helps to know where you stand. The eligibility checker on this page asks three questions about your education, your project management background, and your program management background, and gives you an instant, honest read on whether you meet PMI’s published criteria.

Question 1 of 6

What’s your highest completed education?

This sets how many months of program management experience PMI asks you for.

Question 2 of 6

Do you hold an active PMP® certification?

PMI accepts an active PMP in place of the entire project management experience requirement — it closes one of the two legs instantly.

Question 3 of 6

List the projects you led — with their dates.

Same rule as the PMP: overlapping months count once, and only the last 15 years count.

Add your first project above.

Question 4 of 6

Now the programs — groups of related projects you directed.

A program is several related projects managed in a coordinated way to deliver benefits no single project could. Running one big project is not a program — directing the layer above it is.

Unique program months0 months

Add your first program above.

Question 5 of 6

On those programs, which best describes what you did?

PMI’s wording is directing the coordinated management of related projects to achieve benefits — the panel reads for exactly this.

Question 6 of 6

Could you evidence those programs in writing today?

Unlike the PMP, every PgMP application is read by a panel of PgMP-certified assessors. Your written program summaries decide it.

Step 1 of 6

What are the PgMP eligibility requirements?

Every pathway to PgMP needs 4 years of project management experience or an active PMP credential, earned within the last 15 years. Your education level determines how much program management experience you need on top of that.

Two things most candidates miss: all experience, project and program, must fall within the last 15 years, and holding an active PMP satisfies the entire project management half of the requirement on its own.

  • Secondary or high-school diploma: 4 years project management (or active PMP) plus 7 years program management
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher: 4 years project management (or active PMP) plus 4 years program management
  • Bachelor’s from a GAC-accredited program: 3 years project management (or active PMP) plus 3 years program management

What counts as an “active” PMP for PgMP eligibility?

PMI treats your PMP as active only if you are current on its maintenance requirements. That means earning 60 PDUs in your three-year PMP cycle, with at least 35 of those 60 coming from the Education category. If your PMP has lapsed, it no longer satisfies the project management portion of PgMP eligibility, and you would need to document the underlying project management years directly.

Questions people ask

No, this is a free self-assessment based on PMI’s published PgMP eligibility criteria. Only PMI’s own application and panel review can formally confirm eligibility; the checker tells you, honestly and instantly, where you stand before you invest in the application.

The rules themselves are exact and mirror PMI’s published requirements by education and experience. What the checker cannot judge is whether your experience is truly program-level; that is what the panel review evaluates, and where guidance matters most.

Do not self-reject. Borderline usually means program-level work described in project words, so map your multi-project experience against what the panel looks for: ownership, interdependencies, and measurable benefits.

Yes, in two ways: the panel review evaluates your experience summaries, and PMI randomly audits applications, which may require supporting documents and references within 90 days. Claim only what you can stand behind.
