Every PMI certification · checked against the PMI CCR Handbook, April 2026

How many PDUs do I need for my PMI certification?

PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA need 60 PDUs every three years. PMI-ACP, PMI-RMP, PMI-SP, PMI-CP and PMI-CPMAI need 30. CAPM needs 15. In every case most of them must be Education, and a minimum must sit in each of the three Talent Triangle areas. The full table is below.

What are the PDU requirements for each PMI certification?

Every number in this table comes from PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook, April 2026 edition. All cycles are three years.

Certification Total PDUs Education minimum Ways of Working Power Skills Business Acumen Any area Giving Back maximum
PMP 60 35 8 8 8 11 25
PgMP 60 35 8 8 8 11 25
PfMP 60 35 8 8 8 11 25

CAPM 15 9 2 2 2 3 6

The Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen and Any area columns add up to the Education minimum. PMI-PMOCP and the Disciplined Agile certifications follow different rules and are covered below.

How do I read this table? Take PMP. You need 60 PDUs in three years. At least 35 of them must be Education. Inside those 35, at least 8 must be Ways of Working, 8 Power Skills and 8 Business Acumen; the other 11 can be any area. The remaining 25 can be Giving Back, or more Education if you prefer.

What do the columns mean?

What is the Education minimum?

The number of PDUs that must come from learning: courses, webinars, reading, podcasts, structured training at work. It is a floor, not a cap. You can do all your PDUs as Education.

What are the Talent Triangle minimums?

The smallest number of Education PDUs you must have in each of the three areas. They sit inside the Education minimum. Giving Back cannot fill them.

What is the Giving Back maximum?

The most PDUs PMI will accept for working as a practitioner, volunteering, mentoring or creating content. Anything above the cap is not counted.

Which rules apply to me?

I hold PMP, PgMP, PfMP or PMI-PBA

60 PDUs in three years. 35 Education, with 8 in each Talent Triangle area. Giving Back capped at 25. The four certifications share one rule, so if you hold two of them your Education PDUs do double duty.

Renew PMP · Renew PgMP

I hold PMI-ACP, RMP, SP, CP or CPMAI

30 PDUs in three years. 18 Education, with 4 in each Talent Triangle area. Giving Back capped at 12. Half the numbers of the 60-PDU group, same shape.

Renew PMI-ACP

I hold CAPM

15 PDUs in three years. 9 Education, with 2 in each Talent Triangle area. Giving Back capped at 6. One good course clears it.

Renew CAPM

Can I use the same PDUs for two certifications?

Partly, and the part that carries over is the part people find hardest to earn.

PMI’s handbook says it plainly: “Since Power Skills and Business Acumen concepts are broader educational topics and not specific to any one certification domain area, the PDUs claimed in these education areas can be applied across all certifications.”

Power Skills and Business Acumen

Count towards every PMI certification you hold. Earn 8 of each once and both your PMP and your PgMP are covered for those areas.

Ways of Working

Specific to the certification it was earned for. The one exception: all Ways of Working PDUs count towards PMP, whatever certification they were registered against.

Giving Back

Applies across all certifications, up to each one’s cap.

Hold PMP and PgMP together? One 60-PDU bundle with 8 in each area closes both cycles. See how the PgMP bundle works.

What about PMI-PMOCP and Disciplined Agile?

Does PMI-PMOCP follow the same table?

Not quite. PMOCP runs on a three-year cycle with 60 PDUs, but PMI publishes a different Education split for it. We have left it out of the table above rather than print a number we cannot yet confirm with PMI. Check your CCRS dashboard, which shows the exact requirement for your credential.

Do the Disciplined Agile certifications use PDUs?

Yes, but on a different programme. DASM, DASSM, DAC and DAVSC renew every year with 7 PDUs in agile topics. They are not part of the CCR tables above.

Where do I check my own numbers?

Your CCRS dashboard at PMI shows the PDUs you have reported, split by area, against the requirement for each certification you hold. It is the only place that knows your cycle dates.

1. Log in to CCRS

Go to ccrs.pmi.org and sign in with your PMI account.

2. Open the dashboard

Each certification shows a bar for total PDUs and one for each Talent Triangle area.

3. Find the gap

The area with the smallest bar is the one to fill first. It is almost always Power Skills or Business Acumen.

Track everything in one place with the free PDU log template. It does the 8-8-8 arithmetic for you.

Questions people ask about PDU requirements

At least 8. The minimum is a floor. You can have 20 in Power Skills and 8 in the other two and still renew, as long as the total Education is 35 or more.

No. The minimums are inside the Education requirement. Giving Back is counted separately and capped.

Each certification keeps its own requirement and its own cycle. What changes is how much overlap you get: Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs count for all of them, so the extra work for a second certification is usually only Ways of Working.

The day you passed the exam. It ends on the same date three years later. Your CCRS dashboard shows both dates.

No. PMI applies the same CCR rules everywhere. Only the renewal fee differs by membership status, not by country.

Who checked these numbers?

Kavita Sharma. She holds the PMP and the PgMP, renews both herself, and has coached PMP, PgMP and PMI-ACP candidates since 2014. Her courses are registered with PMI, so the PDUs come with claim codes.
