A CCR audit checks whether the PDUs you claimed match what your certification actually required: PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA need 60 PDUs per three-year cycle; PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need 30; CAPM needs 15. Within those totals, education minimums and Talent Triangle splits apply. Keep records showing the category, hours and dates behind every PDU you claimed.
30
PDUs per three-year cycle
PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need 30 PDUs every three years, of which at least 18 must be Education.
15
PDUs per three-year cycle
CAPM needs 15 PDUs every three years, of which at least 9 must be Education.
3

A continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed.
What does a CCR audit actually check?
At its core, a Continuing Certification Requirements audit is a check that the PDU total you reported matches the total your credential requires, and that the required minimums inside that total were actually met. A continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed, so the audit is looking at everything you logged inside that three-year window. It is not asking whether you did interesting work. It is asking whether the arithmetic behind your renewal is correct.
How many PDUs does my credential need in a three-year cycle?
The total depends entirely on which credential you hold. This is the first number to confirm before anything else, because every other check in an audit is measured against it.
- PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA: 60 PDUs per three-year cycle
- PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP: 30 PDUs per three-year cycle, of which at least 18 must be Education
- CAPM: 15 PDUs per three-year cycle, of which at least 9 must be Education
For the 60-PDU cycle, how much has to be Education?
At least 35 of the 60 PDUs must come from Education, meaning taught learning rather than volunteering or giving back to the profession. There is no ceiling on Education PDUs, so it is entirely possible to reach the full 60 through Education alone. If your record shows fewer than 35 Education PDUs against a 60-PDU total, that is one of the first mismatches an audit would surface.
What's the minimum in each Talent Triangle area?
Inside those 35 Education PDUs, a minimum of 8 PDUs must sit in each of the three Talent Triangle areas: Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. That is 24 PDUs fixed across the three areas, leaving 11 Education PDUs that can go anywhere you choose. A record that shows 35 Education PDUs total but cannot be broken down by area is not enough to demonstrate the requirement was met.
For the full breakdown of how those 8-PDU minimums and the 11 free PDUs work together, see how many PDUs you need in each Talent Triangle area.
Is there a cap on Giving Back PDUs?
Yes. In the 60-PDU cycle, Giving Back is capped at 25 PDUs and is entirely optional. You can renew without touching this category at all, since Education alone can cover the full 60. What an audit would flag is a Giving Back claim above 25 PDUs, or Giving Back activity claimed without the category being distinguishable from Education in your own records.
What should I actually keep, in case of audit?
Since the audit is fundamentally a check of totals and splits, the most useful thing you can keep is a record that lets you reconstruct, for every PDU claimed, three things: which category it falls under (Education or Giving Back), which Talent Triangle area it belongs to if it is Education, and the date it falls within your current three-year cycle. If you can answer those three questions for every PDU on your record, you can answer whatever an audit asks.
This matters most for anyone claiming PDUs close to the required minimums rather than well above them. A PMP-level record with exactly 35 Education PDUs, split 8, 8, 8 and 11, and exactly 25 Giving Back PDUs, has no room for a single misclassified entry. A record well above the minimums in each category has more room for error before it becomes a problem.
What if my numbers don't add up cleanly?
Work backward from the fixed minimums first. For a 60-PDU cycle: 8 PDUs in Ways of Working, 8 in Power Skills and 8 in Business Acumen account for 24 of the required 35 Education PDUs. The remaining 11 Education PDUs can sit in any of the three areas, and the last 25 PDUs of the 60-PDU total can come from Giving Back, or simply from more Education, since Education has no ceiling. If your total across categories does not reach 60, or your Education total does not reach 35, or any single Talent Triangle area falls short of 8, that is the gap to close before you rely on the renewal being final.
Questions people ask
Both, depending on where you are. The cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned, and then three years from the date it was last renewed for every cycle after that.
Yes. Education has no ceiling, so all 60 PDUs in a PMP-level cycle can come from Education, provided the 8-PDU minimum in each Talent Triangle area is still met.
No. Giving Back is optional and capped at 25 PDUs in a 60-PDU cycle; it exists as one way to fill part of the total, not a requirement in itself.
