What Do PDU, CCR, CCRS and Talent Triangle Mean?

PDU stands for Professional Development Unit, the unit PMI uses to measure continuing education; CCR is the Continuing Certification Requirements program, covering a three-year cycle; CCRS is the online system where PDUs are reported; and the Talent Triangle is PMI's three-part skill framework — Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen — used to categorize Education PDUs.

1

year

Miss the renewal deadline and PMI suspends the certification for up to one year while you finish the requirement — nothing is lost yet, and PDUs earned during the suspension still count.

The

certification expires

If the one-year suspension passes with the requirement still unmet, the certification expires. Reinstating it means a new application, the exam fee again, and retaking the exam — it is not simply a matter of catching up on PDUs after that point.

60

PDUs per three-year cycle

PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA each need 60 PDUs every three years.

What does PDU stand for?

PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. It is the currency PMI uses to track the continuing education and professional activity that keep a certification active. Every certified professional earns PDUs across a cycle and reports them to PMI as proof the requirement has been met.

The number of PDUs needed depends on the credential. PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA each need 60 PDUs per three-year cycle, PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need 30 PDUs per three-year cycle, and CAPM needs 15 PDUs per three-year cycle. The full breakdown, including which PDUs count as Education, is on the page covering How many PDUs do I need for my PMI certification?

What does CCR mean?

CCR stands for Continuing Certification Requirements, the PMI program that governs how a credential stays valid after the exam. It defines the length of the cycle, the PDU total due, and what happens if that total is not met on time. A CCR cycle runs three years, beginning the day the certification exam is passed, not the day the certificate arrives.

Miss the deadline and the certification does not disappear immediately. PMI suspends it for up to one year while the requirement is finished, and PDUs earned during that suspension still count. If the one-year suspension passes with the requirement still unmet, the certification expires — reinstating it at that point means a new application, the exam fee again, and retaking the exam, not simply catching up on PDUs.

What is CCRS?

CCRS stands for Continuing Certification Requirements System, the online platform where PMI-certified professionals log the PDUs they earn. Each activity — a course, a webinar, volunteer work, self-directed reading — gets entered as its own record, categorized by PDU type, so the running total for the cycle is visible at any time.

CCRS is also where PMI checks the work if a renewal is selected for audit, so accuracy in how an activity is logged matters as much as earning the PDU in the first place. The mechanics of entering activities correctly are covered on the page How do I report PDUs in CCRS?

What is the Talent Triangle?

The Talent Triangle is PMI’s framework for categorizing Education PDUs into three skill areas: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. For a 60-PDU cycle, at least 35 PDUs must be Education, and within those 35, a minimum of 8 PDUs must sit in each of the three areas — 24 fixed, leaving 11 Education PDUs free to place anywhere. Education itself has no ceiling on any credential, so all 60 PDUs in a cycle may be Education if that is how they are earned.

The other PDU categories outside Education are less structured by area, but Giving Back PDUs are capped at 25 in a 60-PDU cycle and are optional, not required. A full walk-through of how the three areas apply to each credential is on the page How many PDUs do I need in each Talent Triangle area?

Questions people ask

No. A PDU is the unit that gets earned and counted; the CCR is the overall program — the three-year cycle, the total due, and the consequences of missing it — that the PDUs are counted against.

No, it starts the day the certification exam is passed, which is often earlier than the date the physical or digital certificate is issued.

PDUs that are earned but not entered into CCRS are not counted toward the renewal total, so activity without a corresponding CCRS record does not satisfy the requirement.

Yes. Education has no maximum on any credential, so a full 60 PDUs in a three-year cycle may be Education, as long as the minimum of 8 PDUs in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen is still met.
