What happens if my PgMP application is rejected?

PMI emails you the reasons your experience summaries were not accepted, and gives you one chance to amend them and resubmit. If the second submission is also not accepted, PMI closes the application and refunds your exam fee.

Each panel review takes about 60 days, and the resubmission takes about the same again. So a rejection costs you a rewrite and a few months. It does not cost you your fee, and it does not bar you from applying again later.

It also is not a judgement on your career. The panel never sees your name, your employer or your title. They read what you wrote and decide whether it describes a programme. Most rejections are a writing problem sitting on top of real programme experience.

Rejected, or audited? They are not the same thing

Three different things get called a rejection, and each has its own fix. Find yours in the first column before you change a word of your application.

What the email says What it means What you do next
You do not meet the eligibility requirements Your months of project or programme experience did not add up to the 48, 48 or 84 the application asks for, or your dates overlapped Recount the months without double-counting, and reapply when the totals genuinely hold
Your application has been selected for audit Nothing has been rejected. PMI wants proof of what you wrote before you pay Send the documents. How the PgMP audit works
The panel did not approve your experience summaries The reviewers did not see programme management in your writing. This is the rejection most PgMP candidates mean Amend the summaries they named, and resubmit once. The rest of this page

Why the panel sends experienced programme managers back

The reviewers are PgMP holders working from your words alone. Four things stop them, and all four are about how the work was described rather than the work itself.

  • One large project, written up as a programme. The panel is looking for several related projects pulling towards one organisational benefit. Workstreams inside a single initiative do not read that way to a stranger.
  • No benefit named. Outputs delivered, with nothing about what the organisation gained. A summary that ends at go-live leaves the reviewer with nothing to approve.
  • “We” instead of “I”. PMI asks for your personal contribution. When the sentence belongs to the team or the sponsor, the reviewer cannot tell what you owned.
  • Textbook language. Definitions of governance and benefits realisation, in place of what you actually decided. Reviewers are trained to mark this as insufficient detail.

If you want the full treatment of what a passing summary looks like, with a before-and-after rewrite, read how the PgMP panel review works. That page is written for people who have not submitted yet. This one is for after.

Step by step, what you do after a rejection

Work through these in order. The most expensive mistake is rushing the resubmission while the disappointment is fresh, and spending your one rewrite on the wrong thing.

The second submission is your last one

This is the fact most candidates find out too late, so it is worth being blunt about.

  • You get one opportunity to amend your experience summaries after a failed panel review.
  • The amended application goes back to the panel for a second reading.
  • Pass it and you are eligible to book the exam.
  • Fail it and PMI closes the application and refunds your exam fee. There is no third reading.

Nothing here stops you starting a fresh application later. But a fresh one begins at the beginning, with the fee and the sixty days again, so the rewrite in front of you is worth doing slowly.

Can I appeal a rejected PgMP application?

Yes. PMI runs a formal Certification Appeals process, and it covers the rejection of a certification application and a dispute over a failed audit. It is the only route for challenging a decision about your certification status.

What you need to know The rule
Your window 30 days from the decision you are challenging
How to send it In writing, by email to certappeals@pmi.org
What to include Your name and email, why the appeal should be granted, and the evidence that supports it
What happens next PMI acknowledges within 3 days and decides within 30 days, unless it tells you a delay is expected

Be honest with yourself about which situation you are in. An appeal is for a decision reached the wrong way, where a process was not followed or evidence was not considered. It is not a second opinion on your writing. If the panel simply did not see programme management in your summaries, the rewrite is your route, and it is the faster one.

Questions people ask after a PgMP rejection

Once. After a failed panel review PMI emails you the reasons and gives you one opportunity to amend your experience summaries and resubmit. If the second submission is also not approved, the application is closed and your exam fee is refunded.

No. If your application is closed after a second unsuccessful panel review, PMI refunds the exam fee.

Plan for about 60 days again. The amended summaries go back to a panel and are read in the same way as the first submission.

A closed application does not carry a permanent mark against you, but a new application starts from the beginning, with the fee and the panel review again. Before you spend that, get the summaries in front of someone who has passed the panel.

No. Your PMP runs on its own three-year cycle of 60 PDUs, and a PgMP application outcome has no bearing on it. Check your renewal requirements if that cycle is due.

You receive the reasons your responses were found unsatisfactory, tied to the prompts you answered. It is enough to work from, and it is what your rewrite has to answer, but it is not a line-by-line edit of your text.

No. Change what PMI named. Summaries the panel accepted are working, and rewriting them puts approved material back in front of reviewers for no gain.

You can, if the original one genuinely was not a programme and you have a better example from the last 15 years. Recheck your month totals if you do, because swapping a programme changes them.

No. An audit asks you to prove what you wrote, and it happens before you pay. Nothing has been refused. See how the PgMP audit works.

No. PMI requires the responses to be your own, and having someone else write them breaches the Code of Ethics. Getting your own draft reviewed, questioned and sharpened is a different thing, and it is allowed.

30 days from the decision, in writing to certappeals@pmi.org, with the evidence that supports your case. PMI acknowledges within 3 days and normally decides within 30.

Make the one rewrite you have count

You get a single amended submission, and you are the worst-placed person to judge it, because you lived the programme and the reviewer has only your paragraph. A read-through by someone who has cleared this panel is what turns the second attempt into the last one you need.

Kavita reads PgMP applications line by line against what the panel is trained to look for, and tells you where a reviewer will stop reading.
