A programme is not a large project

This is the whole difficulty, and it is why capable project managers struggle when they are promoted into programmes. They keep doing what made them good — driving delivery, protecting scope, hitting dates — and the programme underperforms anyway, because a programme is not judged on whether its projects finished.
It is judged on whether the benefits arrived. Which changes what the person in charge should be spending their week on.

How PMI wants programme experience described, and what the panel is actually assessing. This is where PgMP candidates are most often stopped.

PgMP is gated twice, and the gates are the hard part

Unlike the PMP, PgMP puts a panel of practitioners between the application and the exam. They read how the candidate describes their programmes and judge whether the work was genuinely programme management. Strong candidates are rejected there for describing real programme work in project language.
So the application and the panel review are taught inside the four days and supported afterwards, rather than left to each person to work out alone. Eligibility is stricter than the PMP and worth checking before you plan a cohort — check PgMP eligibility here.

What training teams ask about PgMP

Because they are already running programmes. A PMP teaches how to deliver a defined scope; a programme manager’s job is to deliver benefits, which sometimes means changing the scope of the projects underneath them. If your people are coordinating several related projects and being held to an outcome rather than a deliverable, PMP is not the credential that matches what they do.
Not yet. PgMP has so far been delivered as individual mentorship, which is where the results on this page come from. The four-day in-house format is offered on the same material and the same method, and the application and panel review support is identical.
Fewer than you expect — PgMP eligibility is considerably stricter than PMP and is assessed on programme management experience specifically, not on years in senior roles. Check it before planning a cohort rather than after.

They are separate rooms. The two groups are at different levels and the discussion is what makes either workshop work. Where an organisation wants both, they are usually scheduled as consecutive engagements.
