PMP Renewal · 2026

How many PDUs do you still need?

Most people know the number is 60. Far fewer know that 24 of them are locked to specific categories — which is how you reach renewal week holding 58 PDUs and still fail.

THE BIT THAT CATCHES PEOPLE

60 PDUs. But 24 of them aren’t yours to choose.

At least 35 of your 60 must be Education. Inside those 35, three minimums are fixed — one per Talent Triangle area. That’s the 8-8-8 rule.

8

Ways of Working

Methods, delivery, tools, technical practice.

8

Power Skills

Leadership, communication, influence, conflict.

8

Business Acumen

Strategy, finance, organisational awareness, benefits.

That leaves 11 free Education PDUs (35 − 24) which can be in any area, and 25 remaining PDUs that can come from anywhere. Education has no ceiling — all 60 can be Education if you want. Giving Back has a ceiling of 25.

The failure mode is predictable. People load up on Ways of Working because it’s what their role throws at them, arrive at renewal with 58 PDUs, and discover they have 3 in Business Acumen. The total was never the problem.

THE TWO BUCKETS

Where PDUs actually come from

Two categories, different rules, very different audit exposure.

Category What counts Cap
Education Courses, webinars, conferences, self-directed reading, on-demand training No maximum — minimum 35
Giving Back — volunteering Volunteering, mentoring, speaking, writing, creating content 25 combined
Giving Back — working as a practitioner Simply doing project work as your job 8 of combined 25

Can you get to 60 for free?

Technically yes. PMI members get free webinars, self-directed reading counts, and volunteering counts. Plenty of people assemble a full cycle at no cost and there’s nothing wrong with it.

What it costs instead is time and attention: three category balances tracked across three years, evidence kept for each activity, and every claim entered by hand — which is where most reporting errors start. Most people who go this route do it in a panic in the final quarter anyway, which is the worst moment to discover you’re six PDUs short in Business Acumen.

The alternative is one course that carries all 60 with the categories already balanced and the claim codes pre-approved. Which of those is worth paying for depends entirely on what your time is worth and how close your cycle end is.

If you’re late

Missing your cycle end date is recoverable. For twelve months.

This is the part that causes the most panic and the most misinformation.

Active

Renewed on time

60 PDUs reported and the renewal completed before your cycle end date. Nothing further to do.

Congratulations

Suspended — 12 months

Cycle ended, PDUs short

You cannot use the PMP designation during suspension. But you can still earn the missing PDUs and complete the renewal at any point till 12 months.

Expired

Twelve months passed

The certification is gone and there is no renewal route back. You re-apply and sit the exam again. Can not use PMP in signature.

If you are currently suspended, you are not too late. You are inside the twelve-month window, and completing the PDUs restores your credential without an exam. The planner above will tell you roughly how much of that window is left.

Reporting

Most renewal problems are reporting problems

The PDUs are usually there. What goes wrong is how they get entered.

The wrong Talent Triangle area. A date that falls outside the cycle. A description that doesn’t match the activity claimed. Each of these can bounce a claim, and you tend to find out at the worst possible moment — days before your cycle ends, with no time to earn replacements.

Pre-approved claim codes remove the whole category of error. The provider has already registered the activity with PMI, with its Talent Triangle area and hours fixed. You enter a code; PMI recognises it. Nothing to categorise, nothing to describe, nothing to get wrong.

If you’re claiming manually, keep evidence as you go — certificates, agendas, confirmation emails. PMI audits a percentage of renewals and reconstructing three years of activity retrospectively is genuinely unpleasant.

What people say

From students and readers

You know I have been told by many that reading the PMP manual is the most boring task one would ever want to do. I found your book extremely gripping and an easy read.

The course content was comprehensive and engaging. The pre-approved codes made the reporting easy. The reporting of PDU took approx 3 minutes and i was done, making it easy to earn my 60 PDUs without stress. Highly recommended.

Michael B.Project Director, USA

My PMP was suspended and PMI asked for PDU tracker in an a certain format which i had no clue. I bought the course and asked for the PMI required format. The support team helped and i was able to provide the required information within time. My PMP was reinstated in 24 hours.

FAQ

Common questions

60 PDUs every three years. At least 35 must be Education PDUs, and within those, a minimum of 8 in each Talent Triangle area — Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. The remaining 11 Education PDUs can be in any area.

It is the minimum Education requirement per Talent Triangle area: 8 PDUs in Ways of Working, 8 in Power Skills and 8 in Business Acumen. That accounts for 24 of your 35 required Education PDUs.

Yes. Education has no maximum, so all 60 can be Education PDUs. Giving Back is capped at 25 per cycle, and within that, no more than 8 can be claimed for working as a practitioner.

Your certification moves to suspended status for 12 months. During suspension you cannot use the PMP designation, but you can still earn the missing PDUs and complete the renewal. If the 12 months pass without renewal, the certification expires and the only route back is retaking the exam.

Up to 20 PDUs can carry into your next cycle for the PMP, but only those earned during the final 12 months of your current cycle. Surplus earned earlier does not carry forward.

Not if your provider issues pre-approved claim codes. Manual entry is where most reporting errors happen — wrong category, wrong date range, or a description that does not match the activity.
