How does the PgMP application audit work?

How does the PgMP application audit work?

An audit means PMI asks you to prove what you wrote before you pay. You send a copy of your degree and a signed verification from the supervisor or manager on every programme and project you listed.

PMI gives you 90 days to send the documents and clears a complete package in about five to seven working days. The audit is free, so it costs you time and nothing else.

Being selected is not a judgement on your application. Selection is mostly random, PMI audits a share of everything that comes in, and nothing has been refused. It is a check on the process, not on you.

Where the audit sits in the PgMP process

The PgMP has an extra gate the PMP does not, and the audit lands before it. Knowing the order tells you what an audit is actually delaying.

Stage What happens How long
You submit the application Your education, your experience months and your programme experience summaries go to PMI Your own pace
Audit, if you are selected PMI emails you before you pay and asks for supporting documents. Nothing else moves until it closes Up to 90 days, then 5 to 7 working days
You pay the certification fee Payment is what releases the application into the panel review Same day
Panel review PgMP-certified reviewers read your experience summaries and decide whether you may sit the exam About 60 days
Exam 170 questions in four hours, up to three attempts inside your one-year eligibility period You book it

One consequence worth knowing: your one-year eligibility to sit the exam starts on the day the audit clears, not on the day you applied. An audit does not eat into your exam year.

What exactly does PMI ask for?

Document Who gives it to you What it has to show
Proof of education You A copy of your degree, diploma or the global equivalent, matching the education you claimed. This is the entry that decided whether you needed 48 or 84 months of programme experience
Experience verification The supervisor or manager on each programme, and on each project if you listed project experience Their signature confirming the work, your role and the dates you entered

The PgMP has no contact-hours requirement, so unlike a PMP candidate you have no training certificate to chase. Your audit is your degree and your signatures.

PMI builds the audit package for you. You download it from your dashboard at mypmi.org and it already carries a form for each entry, filled with what you wrote. Your verifier signs the form. You do not write it again.

If you hold a live PMP, the application skipped your four years of project experience, so there are no project verifications to collect either. Your programmes are the whole of it.

Step by step, what you do

The whole audit is a chase for signatures. Everything below is about making that chase short.

How do I get signatures for a programme that ran for years?

This is where a PgMP audit is harder than a PMP one. Programmes are long, sponsors move on, and the person who oversaw you in year one may not be the person who signed off the benefits in year four.

  • Warn your verifiers before you apply, not after. One message telling them a form may come removes the surprise, and the surprise is most of the delay.
  • Name someone who saw the programme, not the most senior person you know. PMI asks for the supervisor or manager over that work. A sponsor who chaired your governance board qualifies; a CEO who heard about it does not sign faster.
  • If your sponsor has left, use whoever oversaw the same programme. What PMI needs is a person who supervised the work and can confirm your role and dates, not a specific job title or a current employee.
  • Set your own deadline at 60 days. You have 90. The margin absorbs one verifier who is travelling and one who forgets.
  • Keep the dates honest. Stretched or overlapping months are exactly what a verifier queries, and a hesitant verifier is a slow one.

What happens if the audit is not completed?

Three outcomes are worth knowing before you start.

  • An incomplete package is not processed and counts as a failed audit.
  • Choosing not to comply also counts as a failure, and it carries a one-year suspension before you can reapply for any PMI certification.
  • PMI can audit after the credential is awarded. If you cannot meet the requirements then, you are not entitled to a refund.

If you believe a failed audit was decided wrongly, PMI’s Certification Appeals process covers exactly that. You have 30 days, in writing, to certappeals@pmi.org.

None of this is a risk if what you wrote is what happened, and if the people who saw it can be reached.

Questions people ask about the PgMP audit

No. An audit asks you to prove what you wrote, and it happens before you pay and before the panel reads anything. A rejection is a separate outcome from the panel review. See what happens if your PgMP application is rejected.

No. There is no audit fee and no charge for the documents you send.

No. The PgMP has no contact-hours requirement, so there is no training certificate in a PgMP audit package. That document belongs to the PMP.

No. The panel review begins only after the audit closes and your payment is received, so an open audit holds up everything behind it.

No. Your eligibility period starts on the day you are told the audit is complete, so you lose no exam time to it.

Name someone else who supervised or oversaw the same programme and can confirm your role and dates. PMI needs a person who saw the work, not a particular title or a current colleague.

Ask why first. It is usually a date or a role description they do not recognise, and correcting your record settles it. If they still decline, use another person who can confirm the same programme.

No. Copies are what PMI asks for, submitted through your PMI dashboard.

As long as your signatures take, plus about five to seven working days at PMI’s end. Candidates who warned their verifiers in advance usually close it in two to three weeks.

The audit fails, which closes the application, and not complying carries a one-year suspension from applying for any PMI certification. If time is running short, send what you have and tell PMI which item is delayed.

No, and it is not worth trying. What you control is how fast you clear it: accurate dates, verifiers you have warned, and your degree copy saved before you apply.

Write the application so an audit is easy

Everything an audit asks for exists before you apply. Collect it while you write and an audit becomes a fortnight of admin instead of a scramble across three former employers.

  • Keep a copy of your degree in the same folder as your draft.
  • For each programme, write down the verifier’s name, current email and phone number while you still have them.
  • Use real start and end dates, and keep programme months clear of project months.
  • Send the heads-up message to your verifiers the week you submit, not the week you are audited.

The audit checks that your programmes are real. The panel review then decides whether you described them as programmes, and that is the gate that stops most candidates.
