QUICK ANSWER: The PMI Talent Triangle is the framework PMI uses to keep your continuing education well-rounded. It has three sides — Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen — and to renew your PMP you must earn a minimum of 8 PDUs in each as part of your 60 PDUs per three-year cycle. At least 35 of your 60 PDUs must be Education; the Talent Triangle minimums live inside that requirement.

What is the PMI Talent Triangle?

When you renew a PMP, PMI doesn’t just want 60 hours of anything — it wants a balanced mix of skills that reflect what modern project managers need. The Talent Triangle is that balance, expressed as three skill areas. PMI updated the names in recent years, so if you certified a while ago, here’s the current mapping.

How many PDUs do you need in each area?

This is where PMs most often trip up. For a PMP: 60 PDUs total per 3-year cycle, at least 35 Education, and a minimum of 8 in each Talent Triangle side.

You can put the remaining PDUs wherever you like — but if you finish a cycle with only 5 PDUs in Business Acumen, PMI can reject your renewal until you fix it. That’s why a good renewal course maps its content across all three sides from the start.

Where do “Giving Back” PDUs fit?

Up to 25 of your 60 PDUs can come from Giving Back — volunteering, mentoring, presenting, creating content, or working as a practitioner (the “working” sub-category is capped at 8). Giving Back PDUs don’t have Talent Triangle minimums, but they do count against your total. The simplest path for most PMs is to cover the required PDUs (often all 60) through a single Education course.
