What “free PDUs” actually means
A PDU is one hour of learning or professional activity PMI recognizes. Nothing says you have to pay for it. Legitimate free sources include:
- PMI member benefits — free on-demand webinars and courses on PMI.org.
- Free provider webinars — live and recorded PDU webinars run year-round.
- Reading & self-directed learning — books, whitepapers, and articles count as Education PDUs.
- Podcasts — several PM podcasts are structured to grant PDUs.
- Giving Back — volunteering, mentoring, speaking, authoring, or working as a practitioner.
The catch: the rules that limit “all free”
- The Talent Triangle minimums. You need at least 8 PDUs in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. Free activities skew toward one or two areas, so you can end up with plenty of PDUs but a short bucket.
- The Giving Back cap. Only 25 PDUs can come from Giving Back, and within that, working as a practitioner is capped at 8.
- The tracking burden. Every free hour must be logged with dates, provider, and Talent Triangle category, or an audit can invalidate it.

When free is the right call
Free works well if you have plenty of lead time before renewal, you’re organized about tracking, and you’re willing to hunt down activities that fill each Talent Triangle area. If your cycle ends in a year and you enjoy the process, the DIY route can cost nothing but time.
When paying is worth it
Paying makes sense when your renewal date is close, you want certainty that every minimum is met with clean records, or you’d rather learn one coherent, useful thing than stitch together random webinars. A pre-approved 60 PDU bundle removes all three risks.
