There is exactly one hard ceiling that governs PDU categories, and it applies to Giving Back. Yes. Within the 60-PDU three-year cycle, Giving Back tops out at 25 PDUs. This category covers activities such as volunteering or working in the profession, and PMI treats it as optional — you do not need any Giving Back PDUs at all if you would rather earn the full 60 through Education. The 25-PDU figure is a limit on how much this category can contribute toward your total, not a target you are required to hit.

Can I earn all 60 PDUs from Education?

Yes. At least 35 of the 60 PDUs must come from Education — taught learning — but Education itself has no ceiling. Because Giving Back is capped at 25 and is optional, the simplest path for many practitioners is to fill the entire 60 with Education PDUs and skip Giving Back altogether. There is no rule that forces you to use Giving Back, or that limits how many Education PDUs you can log.

Do the Talent Triangle minimums count as a maximum?

No, and this is where people get confused. Inside the 35 Education PDUs, a minimum of 8 must sit in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. That accounts for 24 of the 35, leaving 11 Education PDUs free to place in whichever of the three areas you choose. What about CAPM, PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP — are there caps there too?

For these credentials, the numbers available are minimums, not category caps. CAPM needs 15 PDUs per three-year cycle, of which at least 9 must be Education. PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP each need 30 PDUs per three-year cycle, of which at least 18 must be Education. Neither figure is a ceiling — it is the floor you must clear on the Education side. When does the three-year clock start, and what happens if I run out of time

The three-year CCR cycle begins the day you pass the certification exam, not the day the certificate arrives or is activated. If the renewal requirement is not met by the end of the cycle, PMI suspends the certification for up to one year while you finish the requirement — nothing is lost at that point, and PDUs earned during the suspension still count toward the total. If the one-year suspension passes with the requirement still unmet, the certification expires. Reinstating it after that means a new application, the exam fee again, and retaking the exam — it is not simply a matter of catching up on PDUs once the certification has expired.
