What is a PDU, and how many do I need?
A PDU is a Professional Development Unit — one hour of learning or professional activity that PMI recognizes toward keeping your certification current. For the PMP credential, the requirement is:
- 60 PDUs per 3-year Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) cycle
- A minimum of 35 Education PDUs
- A maximum of 25 Giving Back PDUs
- A renewal fee paid to PMI at the end of the cycle
You can earn all 60 through Education if you prefer — that’s the simplest path, and it’s why most PMs renew with a single course bundle.
The PMI Talent Triangle: where your PDUs must fall
Your 35+ Education PDUs have to spread across three areas, with at least 8 PDUs in each:

The free ways to earn PDUs (and their limits)
You can assemble 60 PDUs for little or no cash — it just costs time and record-keeping:
- PMI membership webinars & PMI.org content — free on-demand webinars, ~1 PDU each.
- Free provider webinars — many training companies run free PDU webinars year-round.
- Reading & self-directed learning — books, articles, and podcasts count as Education PDUs.
- Giving Back — up to 25 PDUs from volunteering, mentoring, presenting, or working as a practitioner (the “working” sub-category is capped at 8).
- Chapter events — local PMI chapter meetings often carry PDUs.
The catch: free PDUs are scattered, slow to accumulate, and you track every hour and category yourself. Miss a Talent Triangle minimum and PMI can reject the cycle.

- Click Report PDUs and choose the activity category.
- Enter the provider, activity name, dates, and PDUs by Talent Triangle area.
- Submit — pre-approved course PDUs are typically accepted automatically.
- Once you’ve logged 60 PDUs and your cycle is ending, pay the renewal fee.
