A PDU claim is almost always rejected for a numeric reason: it falls outside your three-year cycle, it pushes Giving Back PDUs past the 25-PDU cap in a 60-PDU cycle, or it does not meet the required Education minimum — 35 of 60, 18 of 30, or 9 of 15, depending on your credential. Check the date, category and count before resubmitting.
A claim is almost always rejected because it fails one of PMI’s numeric rules, not because the activity itself was invalid. The three most common triggers are: the PDU is dated outside your current three-year cycle, it pushes your Giving Back total past the cap for a 60-PDU cycle, or it does not add up to the Education minimum required for your credential.
Each of these has a specific number attached to it, and comparing that number against what you actually submitted is the fastest way to find the mismatch. Before you resubmit anything, pull up your PMI account and check your cycle dates, your current PDU totals by category, and the certificate of completion for the activity in question.
A continuing certification cycle runs three years from the date the certification was earned or last renewed. If the activity you completed falls before the start date of your current cycle, or after its end date, PMI will not count it toward this cycle’s total, even if the PDU itself is otherwise valid.
Confirm your cycle start and end dates in your PMI account before resubmitting, and make sure the completion date you entered on the claim matches the date printed on your certificate of completion. A one-day discrepancy is enough to push an activity outside the window.
Giving Back is capped at 25 PDUs in a 60-PDU cycle and is optional. If you have already logged 25 Giving Back PDUs for the cycle and then submit another one in that category, PMI rejects the excess rather than letting it count toward your 60.
The fix is to reclassify the extra activity as Education if it genuinely qualifies, since Education has no ceiling and all 60 PDUs in the cycle may come from it. If it does not qualify as Education, the activity simply will not count this cycle, and you will need a different one to close the gap.
At least 35 of the 60 PDUs in a PMP, PgMP, PfMP or PMI-PBA cycle must be Education. The same principle applies at a smaller scale to other credentials: PMI-ACP and PMI-RMP need at least 18 Education PDUs out of the 30 required every three years, and CAPM needs at least 9 Education PDUs out of the 15 required every three years.
Inside the 35 Education PDUs for a 60-PDU cycle, a minimum of 8 must sit in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen — 24 fixed, leaving 11 Education PDUs free to place anywhere. If a claim was rejected while you still needed Education hours in one of those three areas, logging it as Giving Back or another non-Education category is the likely cause. Open the claim in your PMI account and check three things in order: the completion date against your cycle dates, the PDU category against the caps and minimums above, and the number of PDUs entered against what the certificate of completion actually states. Correct whichever field is wrong, attach the certificate if it is missing, and resubmit.
If the claim was rejected because the category no longer fits your remaining Education requirement, look for a different activity that genuinely qualifies as Education rather than trying to force the same activity into a category it does not meet.
