How Many PDUs Do I Need to Renew My PgMP?

PgMP renewal requires 60 PDUs every three years, the same total as PMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA. At least 35 of those 60 must be Education PDUs, with a minimum of 8 PDUs in each Talent Triangle area. Up to 25 PDUs may come from Giving Back, and the rest is flexible.

The

day you pass the exam

Your three-year CCR cycle begins the day you pass the certification exam, not the day the certificate arrives or is activated.

35

Minimum Education PDUs for a 60-PDU cycle

At least 35 of the 60 must be Education — taught learning. Education has no ceiling, so all 60 may be Education.

25

Maximum Giving Back PDUs in a 60-PDU cycle

Giving Back is capped at 25 PDUs and is optional.

How many PDUs do I need to renew my PgMP?

PgMP sits in the same renewal bracket as PMP, PfMP and PMI-PBA — each of these four credentials requires 60 PDUs per three-year cycle. That cycle does not start when your certificate is mailed or activated in your PMI account; it begins the day you pass the PgMP exam, and runs three years from that exact date, so it is worth noting the date rather than relying on memory.

Of the 60 PDUs required, at least 35 must be Education — PDUs earned through taught, structured learning rather than volunteer or professional activity. The remaining PDUs can come from Giving Back, which is optional and capped at 25 PDUs per cycle. In practice, most program managers end up with a mix: Education covers the bulk of the requirement, and Giving Back fills whatever is left. For how this compares across PMI’s other credentials, see How many PDUs do I need for my PMI certification?

How are the 35 Education PDUs split across the Talent Triangle?

PMI does not let you earn all 35 Education PDUs in a single subject area. A minimum of 8 PDUs must sit in each of the three Talent Triangle areas — Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. That accounts for 24 of the 35 Education PDUs; the remaining 11 can go into whichever of the three areas makes sense for your role and your development goals that cycle.

There is no maximum on Education PDUs for PgMP or for any PMI credential — the 35 is only a floor, not a ceiling. If you would rather not pursue Giving Back activity at all, every one of your 60 PDUs can be Education, as long as the 8-per-area minimum inside that 35 is still met. See How many PDUs do I need in each Talent Triangle area? and How do I earn PDUs? for where these hours typically come from.

What happens if I don't reach 60 PDUs before the cycle ends?

If the three-year deadline arrives and the 60 PDUs are not complete, PMI suspends the PgMP for up to one year rather than cancelling it outright. Nothing is lost at the point of suspension, and PDUs you earn during that year still count toward the outstanding requirement.

The risk sits at the far end of that suspension. If the one-year period passes and the requirement is still unmet, the certification expires. Reinstating it at that point is not a matter of catching up on a few remaining PDUs — it means a new application, paying the exam fee again, and retaking the PgMP exam.

Where can I track all of this for my PgMP renewal?

The 60-PDU PgMP pack lays out the Education minimum, the Talent Triangle split across Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, and the Giving Back allowance in a single log built around PgMP’s three-year cycle, so you can see at a glance what is covered and what is still open before the deadline arrives.
