What a PDU is, the two types, how many you need, and how to report them. Plus the ones you may already have earned without knowing.
What is a PDU
PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. It is how PMI measures the learning you do after you pass your exam. One PDU is one hour of an activity that develops you professionally.
Why PDUs exist
A credential that never expired would say very little about you five years later. So PMI asks you to keep learning, and to show it. That is what the three-year cycle is for.
The three Talent Triangle areas
Every PDU is tagged to one of the three sides of the PMI Talent Triangle®. You need a minimum in each, so you cannot spend the whole cycle on one subject.
Ways of Working
The craft. Methods, tools, delivery approaches, predictive and agile alike — the technical half of the job.
Power Skills
The human half. Leading, communicating, negotiating, handling conflict, building a team people want to be on.
Business Acumen
The context. Strategy, benefits, finance, and understanding why the organisation wanted this thing in the first place.
Where you report PDUs
You report them in CCRS, the Continuing Certification Requirements System, on pmi.org. Nothing counts until you enter it there. It is not automatic.

The two types of PDU
Every PDU is either Education or Giving Back. Which one it is decides how many you are allowed to claim.
Education
You learning something. No upper limit — and PMI sets a minimum you must earn this way, so this is the half that actually has to be filled.
Giving Back
You putting something back into the profession. Capped — useful, but it cannot carry your whole renewal.
What counts as Education
- Courses and training, online or in a room
- Anything from a PMI Authorised Training Partner — these usually carry a claim code
- Conference sessions and chapter events
- Digital media: webinars, podcasts, recorded talks
- Reading — books, standards, articles
- Informal learning: a structured session with a mentor or a colleague, if you can describe what you took from it
- Formal academic study
What counts as Giving Back
- Working as a practitioner — your actual job. See the next tab; this one surprises people
- Creating content: writing, speaking, presenting, blogging
- Volunteering for PMI, a chapter, or another professional body
- Mentoring or coaching someone else in the profession
Pre-approved versus self-reported
A pre-approved activity is already on PMI's register. You enter its claim code, PMI loads the course details itself, and the claim clears in about a minute with nothing to justify.
A self-reported activity is one you describe yourself: title, dates, hours, and which Talent Triangle areas it covers. It is allowed, but it takes longer and it is the type an audit checks most closely.

How many you need
It depends on your credential. Pick yours.
Minimum in each Talent Triangle area
Hold more than one credential? Each has its own cycle, its own end date and its own totals — but one activity can often be reported against several of them. There is a FAQ on that.

Can I earn PDUs while doing my job?
Yes. It is called working as a practitioner and it sits under Giving Back. Most people never claim it.
The rules
- You must be actively practising in the credential's domain — a PMP holder managing projects, a PMI-ACP holder working in an agile environment.
- It counts towards Ways of Working.
- It is capped, and the cap is per cycle, not per year.
- You still have to report it. Doing the job does not report itself.

Internal courses count. Leadership training is Power Skills; a tooling course is Ways of Working.
The conference you attended
Session hours are Education. Breaks and networking are not.

Giving Back. Structured, repeated mentoring — not one helpful chat.

Education, if it is about the profession and you can say what you learned.

Common questions
Do I have to finish my PDUs before my cycle end date?
You get 90 days after your cycle end date to finish the renewal. It does not extend your next cycle.
What happens if I miss it entirely?
Your credential is suspended for one year. During that year you can still earn the PDUs, report them and pay the fee, and your status returns to Active. If the suspension year passes, the credential expires and the only way back is the exam.
I hold two credentials. Do I need double the PDUs?
No. PMI's CCR Handbook says Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs apply across all the certifications you hold, and all Ways of Working PDUs count towards the PMP. In practice you report the same activity once under each credential. Your two cycles will still hold different totals and different end dates, so check each one.
Is it really allowed to claim one course twice?
Across two different credentials, yes. What is not allowed is claiming the same hours twice against the same credential.
How long does reporting actually take?
With a claim code, about a minute: enter the code, add a start and end date, agree to the statement, submit. Self-reported activities take longer because you are writing the description yourself.
What is a claim code?
A short reference for an activity already registered with PMI. Entering it loads the title, provider, hours and Talent Triangle split automatically, so there is nothing for you to describe and nothing for PMI to assess.
Do I have to pay a fee as well?
Yes. PDUs and the renewal fee are separate things — you earn the PDUs, then pay PMI's renewal fee. The Renew button on your dashboard only switches on once your PDU requirement is met.
What does an audit ask for?
Evidence the learning happened: a certificate, a registration confirmation, a letter, or a contact who can verify it. Keep your records for 18 months past your cycle end date. Pre-approved activities are the easiest to evidence, because PMI already holds the course record.
Can I claim something from before this cycle started?
No. The activity must fall inside the cycle you are claiming it against.
Where do I actually go to report them?
pmi.org, sign in, open CCRS from your dashboard, then Report PDUs. Choose the activity type, fill in what it asks for, and submit.
