All Your Questions on PDUs

Understanding PDUs

What are PDUs, and how can I earn them?

PDUs, or Professional Development Units, are earned through professional development activities such as attending webinars, taking courses, or contributing to the profession by mentoring or creating content. You need to spend the required hours to earn equivalent PDUs, i.e., one hour of a project management seminar would earn you 1 PDU.

All PMI certification holders must earn PDUs to actively maintain their PMI certifications.

The Renewal Cycle: Diving in details

You’ve got 3 years to collect a set number of PDUs. The exact number depends on your certification. The below chart shows the PDU requirements for various PMI certifications.

The chart shows PDU required for various certificates

Earning Your PDUs: Two Categories

You need PDUs to renew your PMI certification. They come in two flavors: Education and Giving Back to Profession as per the PMI CCR Guide.

Education PDUs

You can rack up PDUs by taking courses, attending workshops, or even through online learning. Reading articles or attending relevant meetings also counts. No maximum limit. You can earn all PDUs under this head.

Giving Back to the Profession

hare your knowledge by writing articles, volunteering, or just doing your job. Yes, working in project management can earn you PDUs! Maximum PDU limit apply here. However be aware that the learning  should be compliant with PMI's Talent Triangle.

Learning /Education PDUs

  • Learning is MUST for any Professional to grow in their working sphere. and hence PMI introduced the PMI's Talent Triangle to guide the certificate holders.
  • Any learning PDU should comply with PMI's Talent Triangle under the 3 categories of Ways of working, Business Acumen and Leadership Skills.
  • PMI would recognised the education PDUs under the PMI talent triangle only.
  • You can gain all PDUs under this category. There is NO Maximum limit.
  • There is a minimum limit means that within a renew cycle the certificate holder should learn something new in accordance with PMI's Talent Triangle.

Giving Back to Profession PDUs

  • FREE PDUs
  • You can claim PDU under following categories:
    • Volunteering
    • Creating knowledge
    • Working as a professional
  • Have maximum limit so you can not claim all 60 PDUs under giving back to profession category.
  • PMP credential holders can not claim more than 25 PDUs
  • For the remaining PDU's you need earn them under Education PDUs per PMI's talent triangle.

PMI's Talent Triangle is a guideline released by PMI to ensure that the PDU claimed by certification holders are inline with their required domains.  For example a project manager should be working with people and should know how to lead and manage a team (Leadership). They should know how to achieve results (WOW - Ways of Working ) and understand and support portfolios (Business Acumen).

Ways of Working

Ways of working are the skillset required by the project manager to handle the project proficiently. The skills include knowing various methodologies to apply in the changing scenarios.

Power Skills

To get the project executed, we need to work with people. How to motivate and lead a team comes under power skills

Business Acumen

As a Project Manager grows in the organisation, you would need to know the strategic alignment and work with and towards attaining the stratgic goals of teh customer or your organisation. Adopting to the changed schenior, understanding the bigger picture is Business Acumen.

A simple way to earn PDUs is to enroll in a course that offers PDUs. This way, you do not have to track and worry about the TOTAL PDUs and PMI Talent Triangle requirements. Plus, you will learn the new required topics as well.

Other ways to gain PDUs are to volunteer, read, and present. The downside is that you may need to track the PDU requirements yourself.

Free and Paid PDUs

Yes, you can. You can claim PDUs under the category giving back to the profession. You can cite your experience as a Project Manager, or list any sessions you conducted on project management in the PMI CCR as valid PDUs. However, you can claim only up to 25 PDUs under this category. The remaining PDUs must be claimed under education, meaning that you attended a course or read a book to enhance your skills as a Project Manager. These courses or readings should comply with the PMI Talent Triangle.

Paid PDUs offer structured learning and ensure compliance with PMI requirements without needing additional tracking. They are also typically bundled with pre-approved claim codes, saving time and effort.

Renewal Fees

Yes, the PMP renewal fee is applicable even after meeting the 60 PDU requirements.

The PMP renewal fee for India is INR 3,475 for PMI members and INR 11,585 for non-members. If you do not want to become a member, simply click "Renew PMP" on your dashboard at PMI.org.

The PMP renewal fee for the USA is USD 60 for PMI members and USD 150 for non-members.

PMP Status and Renewal

If you miss your renewal cycle, your PMP status changes to suspended. A suspended status means you cannot use PMP credentials anywhere, including in your email signature, and your name is removed from the PMI PMP registry. However, you can still renew your PMP status within 12 months by earning 60 PDUs. If you do not renew within this grace period, your PMP status changes to expired, and you must retake the PMP exam to regain certification.

Yes, you can. Earn 60 PDUs and renew your certification on your PMI dashboard. A suspended status still allows for renewal, provided it is done within the 12-month grace period.

No, once your PMP status becomes expired, you must pass the PMP exam again as a fresh candidate. Alternatively, you can consider pursuing other PMI certifications like Program or Portfolio Management.

Claiming PDUs

You need to earn 60 PDUs over a three-year cycle to renew your PMP certification.
